Here is my answer:
a) Are you happy with the tv or do you wish you had a different one? Was the picture nice, clear and bright? If a big screen is what you want, then this getting this fixed may be the affordable solution.
b) Can you afford $300 to have a service shop repair? If you are happy with the tv, and ok with $300 then sure it is worth fixing.
c) Are you handy with soldering iron, have a basic electronics background and can interpret a service manual? If so you could do this repair yourself for about $50.
Can you get something better at same size for less than say $300? Yes, but it will be used, and you the buyer need to know what to look for when buying used. You don't want to pick up someone elses problem.
