SOURCE: Connection Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1250 tuner?

you are not going to get anything once you disconnected from the provider. It is the same thing as just pull the cable from the wall.
you can get TV signal (normal basic-brocasted) by using the roof top antenna, I don't know what kind of antenna will be require after 2/09. when the TV broadcast change to digital signal. but in the mean time, you need a converter box from analog to digital for the TV.

Nobody want to pay the monthly fee. if you have the equipment, you can set up the receiving station from the satellite. then you don't have to pay anything. As far as I know, no body have such equipment. cable company spend millions of dollars to set them up, so you have to pay for it.

SOURCE: Digital Transition

It's analog.  You need to purchase a digital receiver.  I personally have a USB external digital tuner running in Media Center 2005.  Search Ebay for "ATSC usb".  There's a lot of different options and most of them are pretty inexpensive.  To use a digital tuner in Media Center 2005, you have to leave the analog tuner / tuners in also.  You should still be able to use your current remote control with the new digital tuner.

HP Express Card Digital / Analog not working

First thing I tried to do was to install the drivers that came into the CD didn't work, just using mydvd9 the import/aqcuire option I could have some noise signal, but couldn't find a way to select channels and hanged after a while. This is too trickier, I thought, it should be a way to used quickplay and other applications.

I couldn't get anything from HP site so investigating I found the following.

1) Had to upgrade quickplay to latest version (is pretty cool btw)
2) The card internally is a Hauppage and found that is actually the HVR1500 http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr1500.html.
Drivers + application can be downloaded at http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hvr1250.html

3) After upgrading quickplay and installing drivers and application from hauppage, Quick play had additionally an hp digital tv tuner entry, but here in canada there is no digital signal transmitted through antenna.
4) I have reinstalled manually the drivers that came in the CD, but from the c:\swsetup\HP Digital tv tuner folder
5) After this I had at quickplay a second source "Hp Analog Tv tuner" which allowed me to caputure the regular air signal and wintv worked as well

I'm sure that I did some redundant steps, but it worked and now can I have everything working (quickplay, wintv, digital, analog signals)

Hope this helps and btw I haev uploaded the manuals for thouse who can't get it, since HP doesn't have them in the website.

Cheers

Having loaded windows 8.1 and the PC generally working okay the hauppage win TV has stopped working. Some sites have suggested driver problems, one has mentioned 'rendering', a term I have not come across...

It came in computer with Windows 7 (or some other version) and the manufacturer supplied the drivers most appropriate to the Windows version. Now you have upgraded to Windows 8.1. It may or may not have the proper drivers to run with the hardware. If the manufacturer of the TV tuner released new drivers compatible with Windows 8.1 you must find them and install them. Or you can try to run Windows Update. If new drivers are made available it should find them.
