You can't probably get a free Microsoft word for free unless you are a developer, or you pirate it, but in windows 7 the 'Notepad' application seem to be a good alternative to MS word if you just want to type, alternatively you can use online application like google doc, which is free.

Microsoft offers a 60-day trial software of the Office 2007 suite. I have included a website link at the end of this message. Under the green button Buy Now it says Try 60 day for free. You will need to login with your Windows Live account and go through a bit of filling out but will then have access to the download and a free Office 2007 (with Powerpoint) for free.
