When I log onto my PC the message comes up "the set up files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program". I contacted Webroot as I have subscribed until 3/09. They sent me download instructions to re-install and it downloaded perfectly well, but when I 'ran' the downloaded programme it said that there was already a newer version installed on my PC so I should delete that first. I tried to delete but it did not happen. When I go into 'start' then 'all programs' then Webroot it says "empty", yet my PC is telling me that there is still a corrupted version installed on the PC.
I am in my 60's and not very computer literate so I would like some advice as to how to proceed to clean off the last version so I can re-install the software again via Webroot.
Thank you

Go to start then click> then go to my computer then click>then click drive C > click program files> then delete the files of Webroot files..Then re install again then restart your PC..
hope this may help;

Manually Uninstalling Startup Control Panel
Startup Control Panel is supposed to appear in Add/Remove Programs so that you can
uninstall it easily. Unfortunately, at some point several years ago, something changed
in Windows such that this entry is not created properly on new installations. Sorry
about this. Here are detailed instructions for uninstalling the program manually.
Step 1. Close Startup Control Panel
If Startup Control Panel itself is open, close it by pressing the X in the upper-right
corner of the window.
Step 2. Close Control Panel
If the Control Panel window, where you access the icons for all the different control
panels (Display, Fonts, Sound, etc.), is open, close it by pressing the X in the
upper-right corner of the window.
Step 3. Delete program file
Delete the following files, if they exist. Only one of them should exist.C:\Windows\System32\Startup.cpl
C:\Windows\System\Startup.cpl
Detailed instructions for step 3:
Navigate in Windows Explorer to the directory C:\Windows\System32 . Click away any
warning messages until you see a long list of hundreds of files. Find the file named
either "Startup" or "Startup.cpl". Delete the file by right-clicking on it and selecting
"Delete" from the menu that pops up. Confirm the deletion and then verify that SCP
has been removed. Do not delete any other files or directories:
doing so can damage your operating system.
If you can't find the file in that folder, also look in C:\Windows\System . If you
get an error message saying that the file is in use, verify that SCP and Control
Panel are closed; if so,
try restarting your computer and deleting the file as soon as the computer starts
up again.
Step 4. Delete registry entries (optional)
I do not recommend
performing this step. It is only for advanced users who want to expunge
every last trace of Startup Control Panel from their system. If you do not perform
this step, a little bit of information stored by SCP will remain in your system
registry. This information will not affect or slow down your system
in any way if it is allowed to remain. Removing this information requires using
the Registry Editor, which, if improperly used, can seriously damage your software
and operating system. Proceed at your own risk!
Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and delete the following keys and all their
subkeys,
if they exist:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\mlin\StartupCPL
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\mlin\StartupCPL

Hello Derek
First Try to uninstall the file from "Add or Remove Programs"
start -> control panel -> add or remove programs... Find the program and uninstall it..But if you still get that the uninstall file is corrupted then try the following procedure...
Try to delete the file in the following path you have mentioned... "C/:programmeFiles/Webroot/spySweeper/unins000datfile"
Delete the folder "Webroot" AFTER deleting the file "unins000datfile"...
Now Download the link which they have given you in the mail..You wont face any problem...Thank you!!
Please post back how things turned on or for further assistance..
Regards!!!...
Or just left click the program and send it to the bin and restart pc
Try doing a system restore to before this error started coming up and then you can try removing it there at that point.
To do this, go to START>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>System Restore
Let me know if you have questions while doing this.
It is reversible if it doesn't help and you can either leave everything alone if the error doesn't come up or you can try removing it and installing another version.
The corrupted file is what directs the uninstall program to actuall uninstall all of the parts of the program. In order to remove this, you will need to delete the files by hand. If you are not comfortable with this, then you have 2 options:
1) Bring the machine to a computer tech who will remove it for you.
2) Contact Webroot and explain the situation and they should be able to walk you through removing the corrupted version.
Please note that the software may be saying that a newer version exists, when in fact that is not the case. There are a number of generic messages that are generated when error conditions occur. They are not always 100% accurate.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Repeated attempts to use the "newer" version of the software for the installation will fail. There is no simple way to resolve this other than the brute force method of deleting the main folder that contains the software. This may leave a few bits around, but should allow the installtion of the software. If you look under the "program files" folder, there should be another folder for WEBroot. Delete that entire folder. Reboot your machine and attempt the installation again. It should now install.
Keep us posted.

Go ahead and delete the Webroot folder from your program files on your C drive.
Microsoft.com carries a program for free called Windows Defender that will do the same thing and probably run better than spysweeper in terms of memory and performance on your computer. Just search for it on their website.
Hi,
Please restart your PC once and then try uninstall again.
Let me know the result.
Goodluck..
you need a powerful uninstaller to get rid of it, clickhttp://www.freeuninstalltool.com to get it

Did you try going into control panel and add/remove programs?
Try removeing the program from add or remove programs.
start -> control panel -> add or remove programs.
find the program from the list and click uninstall or change, which ever it may say.
The Windows Installer Service is required to install Spy Sweeper/Webroot AntiVirus 5.8 or Spy Sweeper/Webroot AntiVirus/Webroot Internet Security Essential
6.1. However, by Microsoft's design, the Windows Installer in not
available in Safe Mode. On rare occasions Safe Mode installation is
still desirable, so Webroot has engineered a method to make this
possible. This method uses a file called "SafeCore.exe".
If
the installation is performed using "Safe Mode with Networking" and an
active internet connection is available, the Version Guard feature of
our installer will automatically download and run SafeCore.exe. No
action on the part of the user is required. Otherwise SafeCore.exe will
need to manually be placed in the same folder as the standard Webroot
software installer.
(Example:
if the installer file is already on the Windows desktop, copy
SafeCore.exe to the desktop as well, and then run the Webroot
AntiVirus/Spy Sweeper/Webroot Internet Security Essentials 5.8/6.0
installer to begin the installation process).
To
obtain a copy of SafeCore.exe, please first check what version of the
Webroot software you are trying to install. Right click on the installer
and choose Properties, and then click on the Version tab. A File version will be listed.
If the file version is different than the two listed above, please contact Webroot Technical Support for an alternative option.
If
the computer you are trying to install on does not have a network
connection, it may be required to transfer this file from one machine to
another using removable media such as a USB drive or CD-ROM.
If installing Spy Sweeper/Webroot AntiVirus/Webroot Internet Security Essentials 6.0, the Backup Component may not install completely in Safe Mode since it contains components that require the Windows Installer Service to install completely. You will need to re-run the installation in normal mode to activate the Backup component.

Usually answered in minutes!
I followed the advice on how to uninstall the existing version of Webroot spysweeper by going to start then control panel, then add or remove programmes. I found the Webroot software on the list but when I clicked on uninstall the response was " C/:programmeFiles/Webroot/spySweeper/unins000datfile is corrupted. Cannot uninstall"
I did as suggested after re-starting my PC for a second time I followed the instructions on how to uninstall but the same answer came up that the data file is corrupted and cannot uninstall.
Help!
I have tried to delete the Webroot Spy Sweeper software but all I get is a message saying the file is corrupted and cannot be deleted. I have paid up until March 2009 for Spy Sweeper so I want to be able to download the version that Webroot have emailed to me so I can continue using it until March next year, but I cannot download that version onto my PC until I rid my PC of the existing Webroot software version, which the PC will not allow me to do. I am in limbo!!
Can anyone help me, please?
