There are typically 2 ways to open the back of a watch. Some watches have a snap off cover, other are screwed on.
Snap On Somewhere around the perimeter of the back of the watch you will see a small crescent. This is the place where a small screwdriver can be inserted and twisted to remove the back.
To replace the back, simply position it evenly on the back of the watch and press.
Screw On Removing a screw on back is slightly more difficult. For these backs, there are typically a series of slots around the perimeter of the back of the watch. The best way to loosen the back is with a pair of needle nose pliers. Place the 2 tips of the pliers in slots on opposite sides of the back of the watch. Apply light but constant pressure and turn the back counter clockwise.
To replace the back, carefully replace the back with your fingers. Be sure the back is set correctly in the threads by turning the back slightly counter clockwise. When you feel the threads click into place, simply turn the back clockwise with your fingers to tighten. Once finger tight, once again use the needle nose pliers to tighten the back.

How to get the back off to change the battery

HELLO Marijane,

To get the BACK... back on you will likely need a press.

The back opener for snap back watches

(my opinion) can be seen on eBay at
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Watch-Back-Cover-Case-Opener-Remover-Battery-Change-Watchmaker-Repair-Tool-Kit/292319457729?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

A jewelers loupe ( about 10x power) will help you fond the precise spot to leverage.

Your GOAL is to open the case leaving the LEAST amount of
tool marks. Every time the case is touched,,, it leaves a mark.

THE reason I got into doing watches myself...
huge scratches left by a "PROFESSIONAL".

~~

I suspect you should also (very likely) need a set of jewelers screwdrivers...

All abundantly available on eBay.

Happy hunting!

How can I remove the back to change battery?

Yep.. unless you have a self winding one. They require a sharp jewelers tool to open.. Sometime you can do it yourself , but you chance ruining the watch with scratches. The jeweler puts the watch in a holder that protects the crown and steady the watch. He then takes a tool and inserts it in the seam of the watch back and pops the back open. After the battery is changed the back is pressed back into place by the devise that can put pressure on the back without risking cracking the crown.. Come on man it's only 8 bucks. Just remember once the back has been opened water proof can not be guaranteed anymore.

Hi i have a citizen 100m chronograph watch and i have broken the stem trying to replace the battey how do i repair it or do i have to take it to be repaired.thanks karen

You have to take it to your nearest Citizen dealer, as you won't be able to replace stem yourself. Note: You do not need to remove or to do anything with the stem for replacing battery.

The alarm sound in my casio 526 watch doesn't work. The alrm fashes but no sound.

Make sure when you change the battey that the back is put back the proper way. Otherwise the sound mechanism isn't connected right.

After changing the battery nothing can be changed, no function possible and"open" remains written on the display, the type of the battery is clt 1616

The battery is CTL 1616 and I had the same occurance when I opened up my model Casio model 3043. I needed to use the battery to test my model 2767 and find out if a new battery would bring it back to life (yes, it still lives). After replacing the battey back into my 3043, I jumped the (ac) to (-) and at first the watch would indicate all was well but then it would revert back to "open". I tried over and over to try and get the "open" display to clear but I was not successful. I then thought to go ahead and replace the back on the case to see if the three contact springs would change the display and sure enough, "open" no longer was in the display. The watch works perfectly as before. As for the 2767, as soon as I jumped the (ac) to (-) the "open" display went away. There is only one spring contact to the back case on the 2767 model. Unfortunately I do have an extra spring that fell out when I opened it up and I have no clue as to where it goes. I have not found anyone who can help me on the location for the shorter spring. Any advice would be most helpful.

I just replace the battey on a g shock dw 9050 and i cant set the time i shows the time but at the top it flashes TYO

Did you ground the battery? If not you need to open up the watch and find the ground and take a tweezer and touch the top of the battery and the ground. You should be able to move on from there, if not are your buttons making contact with the movement?
