Thomson Cable modem has an ethernet connection... The ethernet connection goes to your computer via a standard Cat5e patch cable. There is no USB that I know of... Cablevision wire goes to the modem. It should be the first device on the cablevision wire. If you need a splitter, it needs to be a GOOD one, connected DIRECTLY to the incoming Cablevision wire as it enters the house. Use good copper wire.
Order of events: Connect the cablevision wire to the Modem. Connect the Ethernet cable to the computer and the modem. Power on the cable modem. Right click the network Icon near the clock and click 'repair' (Or reboot the computer) Apply for and get an account for cable Internet from your Cable company. After a few days, cable Internet should work.
looking at the internal modem page.usually:192.168.100.1. on your browser.explorer works best for this look up. you dont need internet access for this. once inside you can look at signal strength coming from the street and signal going back. if its out of spec.then that needs to be corrected. Note :call your provider and ask for down/up stream
specifications. also weather or not your modem is ( EOL) End of life.
Good Luck.
First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.
Good Luck
It sounds like the LInksys that they replaced was also a router. A router will route packets to multiple pc's that are connected to it. The cable modem just sees the router as 1 pc. When you use a switch, the cable modem will see all of your PC's. and Comcast just allows 1 pc. You will need to buy a router to use more than 1 PC which will be cheaper than using Comcasts Home Networking service which will network up to 4 pcs
If that's hooked to comcast you can only have one computer hooked up to it, and no modems as they block mac address. If you are a Comcast customer there is a workaround. Turn on your wife's wireless if she hasit, if not get her a wireless card USB is easiest. Turn on sharing on that wireless card and you will be able to access the internet through your wifes computer, and not run afoul of your Comcast agreement. Or request an upgrade to a wireless router from Comcast but your rent goes from $3.00 per month to $10.00!
There is a reset button on the back accessible only by a pen or paper clip. the dhg535 has an internal battery and needs to be reset every time the connection changes or is removed.
Do a powercycle. Make sure to completely turn off the modem, router, after 30 seconds, turn on the modem first then the router.
If that will still not work, perhaps there is a need to update the software of your router.
You may be running into a problem of your ISP only allowing one computer on the internet. while the internet is on can you access the internet from the desktop comcast originally setup? If so that is more then likely your problem.
I have comcast myself and they told me they do not allow home networks. I fixed that problem by using the mac address cloning feature in my router.
The setup cd is also junk, all you should really need to do is: 1. unplug modem, router, and turn off computers 2. Plug modem into router 3. Plug computers into router (don't worry about wireless right now) 4. Turn on modem, wait 20 seconds or so for lights to set, 5. Turn on router. again wait for lights to set 6. Turn on ONE computer that is hard wired into the router 7 Try to surf the net. 8. If successfull try to connect wireless computers (Without using cd) and see if they surf.
If not call comcast and see if your computers are trying to obtain real-world ip's instead of LAN ip's like they should. If so, you'll need to enable DHCP on the router.
