Debbie,
It seems like I'm jumping into a previously un-answered question. I do not know what the initial problem was; but it seems as if you can't get a screen/window to display. The obvious question would be how this problem came about in the first place. Since you probably don't want to be hampered with a delayed solution I'll jump the gun and offer a blind answer.
1. CONTRAST: Try to adjust the contrast (this is the simplest solution - which may not apply - but could be the most beneficial).
2. BATTERY: Try some brand new batteries (of course, you might have already tried this).
3. PLUG IN: I believe the TI-89 Titanium has a USB computer connector. If your CPU can detect your calculator then maybe you only have a display problem.
4. DIAGNOSE: My favorite solution is to just open that ****** up. Grab a small screwdriver and unearth the magic beneath the keys. Maybe there was water damage, maybe there's dust in the way, maybe the power strip got dislodged, maybe it was born like that...maybe it was Maybelline? Who knows, just open that ****** up and figure it out.
I highly doubt a calculator (even a $150 one) is worth sending away for repairs. If you are at your wits end you can try to find somebody in your neck of the woods who'll take a loot at it. And as always, you can ship that baby to me and I'll give it a look-see also. I might even do your math homework to ease some stress.
And of course...CALL TEXAS INSRUMENTS. They are very friendly & helpful. Maybe they can offer up some good advice.
Adios,
Math Cheetah
