Make sure it's an SD and not an SDHC card. Press the MENU button. Use up/down to highlight Setup (four horizontal sliders) and press the OK button. Use up/down to highlight "Format" and press OK.

The C310 works with MMC and SD cards. MMC cards are nearly obsolete and hard to find, so I suggest SD cards. Be sure you get an SD card, 2GB and smaller. Larger cards are actually SDHC cards and will not work in the C310.
I'm guessing you're trying to format a new 4GB SDHC card? If so, am sorry to say that your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out.
Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different.
You'll need to instead purchase a standard SD card (those that are 2GB or less). Forunately these are very inexpensive these days, with 2GB cards going for around $6 with shipping.
But if you must use 4GB, Transcend makes a 4GB standard SD card, but I can't guarantee that it will work with your camera as anything above 2GB for standard SD may have compliance issues.
You haven't said which card you're trying to use but the symptoms are typical of those encountered if you try either a larger capacity SD card (which go to 4GB maximum) or if you're trying to use a later SDHC (the HC means High Capacity) card. The c310 was designed and manufactured before SDHC cards were manufactured and is incompatible at the basic hardware level. SDHC's will fit inside as they have the same form as SD cards, but your camera is unable to use them.
If you have tried using the wrong card then all you need to do to fix the error is to replace it with a standard SD card not exceeding 2GB. In practice you'll find that your camera may have issues with some brands/models of 2GB SD cards but that it will work fine with any make or model of 1GB SD card. The smaller capacity card will also ensure that your camera does not become awkwardly slow in operation.

Hey hardygurl198, What is most likely going on is you need to format the card so it will work in your camera. Every time you get a new memory card for a digital camera or if you put a memory card formatted to a different camera in a new digital camera you will need to format the memory card before you can use it. Directions on how to format your memory card are on page 27 of your camera manual, and I have provided a link to a PDF download of your manual in case you need it. I hope this helps! http://www.kodak.com/global/plugins/acrobat/en/service/manuals/urg00431/C310_CD40_GLB_en.pdf Sincerely, Allan Go Ahead. Use Us.
