Hello Wadeanderton,

In order to place the brushes the proper way you are going to need a flashlight. What you need to do is shine a light up in the brush hole and see where the indention is at the back of the hole and put the tapered edge to that side of the square and then you will have to do the same thing on the other side. I have been working on these for about 10 years and still have to look to make sure they are in the proper direction.

I hope I was able to help and would like to thank you for choosing FIxYa to answer your questions.

My kitchenaid k5ss will not turn on

Did you remove the brushes at any point? If you did it is possible that the brushes are installed correctly. The brushes have a tapered/dog eared side to them, this needs to be lined up within the mixer, if they are not lined up correctly the mixer will not turn on.

Was the speed control board cracked or was it the phase control board? If the bottom screw on the speed control plate is not adjusted correctly the mixer may not turn on as well.

If neither of those fixes the problem try the troubleshooting steps in the service manual. Here is a link to the service manual for the K5ss mixers. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

Mixer works on high speed but not low. Brushes

Motor brushes are fairly cheap to buy. It sounds like the first place to start: http://kitchenaidmixerspares.co.uk/Home/tabid/36/ProductID/88/Default.aspx

How do you install brushes for the motor? I removed them and cannot remember which direction they go in. I have tried every way but the motor will not run. It ran before I removed the brushes.

With the head of the mixer upside down. Back end toward you. The right side brush should be with bevel or narrow side up. The left brush should be with bevel or narrow side down.

How do I replace the carbon brushes on my Kitchenaid mixer. I took them out but didn't pay attention to which direction the beveled edge lies. There is no "up" stamped on them.

do not know the device specifically, but with brushes in general it should be fairly obvious by inspecting the alignment of the brush housing to the rotor to determine the proper orientation. perhaps use a flashlight to look into the brush housing and try to see how it meets the rotor? chances are the "point" of the brush would be in the same direction as rotation. it may also be helpful to try one orientation and turn the shaft slowly by hand to confirm the brush is smoothly contacting the rotor..

KichenAid K5SS Speed lever does not stay in ''off'' position. When the lever is placed in the off position it moves to speed 1 immediately.
