(1999 pontiac grand prix 3100 v6) how do I remove and replace my serpentine belt successfully?

Instructions Things You'll Need
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • Metric socket kit
  • New serpentine belt
    • 1

Park the Pontiac in a safe work area and open the hood.

    • 2

Inspect the top of the black plastic cover that surrounds the fan for the serpentine belt routing diagram. This diagram has the instructions for installing the new serpentine belt around the accessory pulleys.

    • 3

Inspect the front of the engine and locate the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner on the 1999 Pontiac model vehicles is located between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley. The tensioner has a pulley on one end with a bolt head in the center of the pulley. Use the bolt head to rotate the tensioner.

    • 4

Turn the tensioner counterclockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. Pull the belt out from under the tensioner pulley with your other hand. Then, slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops.

    • 5

Pull the belt out of the other remaining pulleys. Then, pull the belt out of the engine bay and lay it on the ground.

    • 6

Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley. Then, route the new belt around the other remaining pullleys by using the serpentine belt routing diagram for instructions.

    • 7

Rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise with the breaker bar and socket. Then, slide the new belt under the tensioner pulley. Slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops. The tensioner pulls all of the slack out of the belt and brings the new belt to the proper tension. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner pulley.

    • 8

Inspect the new belt to ensure that it is seated inside of all the accessory pulleys as directed by the diagram. Then, crank the engine and allow it to run for about 15 seconds. Turn the engine off. Inspect the belt again once more to ensure that
the belt is still around each pulley. Close the hood.

How to adjust a tension pulley?

This vehicle should have an automatic tensioner. You can use a wrench (13mm, 14mm, or 15mm depending on whether it's aftermarket or not) and rotate the pulley bolt clockwise to release tension. If you need to make it tighter, you either has a belt that is in need of replacement or a tensioner that needs to be replaced. This type of automatic tensioner is replaced as an assembly

The tensioner bolt can usually be accessed from above, but it is easier if you can lift the passenger front or the can, remove the wheel, and remove the rear plastic splash shield. This will also make it easier to correctly position a new belt over the crank pulley if necessary.

How do i re-set timing for Landcruiser Prado 1KZ engine. I changed the timing belt but the dash board indicator (T-Belt) is still on. How can i get this to come off and know that timing has been properly...

You have to pull the instrument cluster out of your vehicle. At the back of the cluster there are 2 screws that are close together, change the screws around. They are the only 2 screws together. Your timing is set by lining up the mark on the injection pump sprocket to the mark on the engine body. Same with the camshaft sprocket, the mark is at the top, and then aligning your two line marks on the timing belt (Toyota Belt) to these marks. Also I would suggest replacing your pulley. The Tensioner Pulley bolt should be torqued to 35 Nm. You need a vice with soft jaws to tension the tensioner and aligning the holes with a bit of coathanger wire. When you re install your tensioner you then pull out the wire releasing the tensioner. The tensioner bolts should be torqued to 12 - 13 Nm. Hope that helps you. PS - When you are removing your interior mouldings be careful as they are expensive to replace. When you remove your screws and bolts there are a number of clip systems that hold some of the mouldings in place.

My tensioner pulley seems to be slanted a little and i think its causeing the belt to vibrate off...any ideas or what i can do to fix this?

Make sure the bolt that holds it on is tight. If the belt was recently replaced it may have gotten loosened if the tensioner was pulled in the wrong direction. The tensioner is loosened by pulling on the bolt which moves the pulley. Pulling in the wrong direction will loosen the bolt. If it has been this way for a while it may have damaged the pulley and or bolt.

Need to replace Serpentine belt and p/s belt on my 2002 honda odyssey is this complicated?

the procedure is as follows:-- You have to do it from underneath the vehicle. Take off the rivets to the two plastic covers, and then you will be able to see the tensioner for the belt. Use a 3/4 inch wrench on the tensioner (don't put it on the bolt that holds the tensioner on), and pull it toward the vehicle. The belt will loosen, and you can take it off. As a car owner, you know how important the belt tensioner is for your 2002 Honda Odyssey. However, internal parts wear and damage will loosen or seize the tensioner wheel, causing the belt to slip and make noise. Eventually, the belt may break, shut down the engine and lead you into a serious traffic accident. Before that happens, replace the tensioner on your Honda model and save yourself a lot of problems:---- Remove the Drive Belt:-- 1)Look for the drive belt routing diagram on your vehicle's engine compartment. This is a black and white label, about 4 by 6 inches, usually attached to the radiator shroud or near the strut towers inside the engine compartment. This diagram will be your guide when reinstalling the drive belt. If cannot find one, make a simple sketch on a piece of paper. 2) Insert a belt-tension release tool, or similar tool, into the auto-tensioner arm. 3)Rotate the auto-tensioner arm counterclockwise and slip the belt off the tensioner pulley. 4) Release the auto-tensioner but do not let it snap back in place. 5) Remove the drive belt from the engine compartment. Replace the Belt Tensioner 1) Unscrew the two auto-tensioner mounting bolts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Note the location of each bolt because they are of different size. 2) Remove the old auto-tensioner from the engine compartment. 3) Set the new auto-tensioner in place and start the two mounting bolts by hand. Make sure you install the bolts in their original place. 4) Start tightening the bolts until they hit the stop using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. 5) Torque the two bolts using a torque wrench. Torque the small bolt to 16-foot pounds [22 Nm] and the large bolt to 47-foot pounds [64 Nm]. This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Treadmill slowing down and sticking when you put your weight on it manual says to try leveling screws but doesnt tell you where to find themalso tried oiling but this did no good

Check between belt an deck for heavy wear. (coating worn off deck or belt unraveling) Decks can be flipped usually, worn belts should be replaced. If not check belt tension. Tension adjustment bolts are at rear end caps behind tail roller. If you can step on it and stop striding belt it very well may need a tension adjustment. Also would verify it is striding belt that is stopping. Motor drive belts can cause similar symptoms. {Check Manufacturer For Proper Belt/Deck Lube ie. Wax}

I'm replacing the radiator on 1997 mercedes E420 and while I have it out it looks like surpentine belt would be easy to change just not sure how to do it ?

It has a spring loaded belt tensioner. There are 2 different styles. One has an e12 bolt on the pulley (a 10mm 12pt closed end wrench will work) the other has a 15 mm. bolt on the tensioner pulley. Just turn the bolt( i think to the right ) and it will collapse the spring enough to get the belt off. You can put a pin through the bottom of the tensioner to keep it collapsed if you need to replace the tensioner. If there is a plastic cover on the pulley just pop it off to gain access to the bolt. Good luck-I think some after marked tensioner pulleys may have a t40 style bolt but either way they all work the same.

Belt Tensioner replacement

A simple bolt on assembly, the tensioner for the serpentine belt may need replacement if it fails to smoothly pivot and maintain tension on the belt.

Using a half inch breaker bar, release tension by rotating against the spring, remove the belt from the tensioner. Unbolt the tensioner (one bolt may be so diffucult to reach that you might want to use a racheting open end wrench by Alden.
Install the new tensioner by reversing these steps.
I usually replace the belt at the same time.
