When I try to use the washer I press the Express Wash Cycle as usual. The panel lights up as usual but when I press the start button it dosen't start. I don't hear the front load door lock as usual and after a few seconds the washer beeps and the letters F then dL are displayed. I have a Kenmore Elite Front-Loading Washer purchased in 2005.

That sounds like you are on Pause or Delayed Start. Try Pressing and holding the button. You can also try disconnecting from the mains for 5 minutes.

To pause the wash cycle in progress, press this button; the corresponding indicator light will flash orange, while the indicator light for the current wash cycle phase will remain lit in a fixed manner. 1. Load the items you want to soak into the washer drum.
2. Press the "Power" button to turn on the washer.
3. Press the "Pre Wash" button, this will start a pre-wash cycle that will last for 5 minutes, this will give you the time to add any detergent or laundry pre-treatment solution.

It's hard to tell by the way you've phrased the question whether or not the button is doing what it is supposed to do, or if it is just the light indicator that is not working. So, I will answer both scenarios. // Press start button fully until you hear machine start; (usually less than one full second). In other words, hold button in until ''start'' is _heard_. After start has begun, holding button for 3 full seconds will ''pause'' the cycle. After ''pause'' pressing button again (just like first time) will restart cycle (i.e. ''take it off pause''). After 3 hours--turn "off" the washer.
Turn the washer back "on".

It is possible that presence of moisture within the START button can trigger the cycle to continue as it keep the processor to continue the wash cycle,Hence you must remove the panel and board after disconnecting the wiring harness and use a hair dryer to warm off any presence of moisture on the panel and board. Do it with time to ensure there is no moisture within the panel.
I think this must solve the issue. Repeat the work many times as sometimes moisture and dirt together might form a conductive bond to trigger as a pressed on switch. If possible open panel to clean switch pad.

Add the entire packet of "TIDE WASHING MACHINE CLEANER" directly into the tub (no laundry) and close the door.

Press and hold: SPIN SPEED & SOIL LEVEL buttons--then press POWER button.
Wait for door to lock.

After this--use the correct amount of "HE" detergent & perform a "TUB CLEAN" cycle every (4) months using the *tub clean* option on the control panel.

try unplugging- let sit for an hour- and plug back in

For the Elite (HE) machines:

Press 'STOP' twice, press 'POWER', choose a wash cycle (such as 'NORMAL'), select wash options (water temp), press 'START' to finish the reset sequence.

Other Kemore electronic washers:

Unplug the machine for a minute, plug it in. Press 'PAUSE/CANCEL' twice.

Press these buttons in succession, within 5 seconds: high temp wash, air dry, high temp wash, air dry. If the sequence is entered properly, all of the control panel LED's will illuminate simultaneously. Once this happens, press the cancel button twice. Now you should run a complete cycle again. If the dishwasher actually has a problem, it will fault again (means the unit isn't heating properly). If not, it's business as usual.
