Lifehacker came out with a survey ranking Microsoft Security Essentials the best. And Free. BONUS!
Symantec is known for having the best pay for antivirus known as Norton Antivirus. There are also a handful of other competitors that are almost as good but not quite, namely PCTools, BitDefender, Webroot, etc. there are also several free options available such as Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Avira, and Avast! antivirus. I hope that helps clarify some things.
Hi Divya,
Best Antivirus is 'Bit Defender Antivirus'
However, AVG 2011 Antivirus FREE Edition is available that can be downloaded and installed for FREE. Its basic antivirus protection, FREE and works fine.
Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Whoever you ask will provide you with a difference answer in this regard. The key differences between antivirus are the free options, and the paid for options. Obviously you get that extra bit of protection using paid for options, but there are several free options available. A good free option is AVG AntiVirus, and a good paid for option is ESET NOD32. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372364,00.asp
