Drain pump/motor not draining.

Hi Mike,

Product: GE WJSR2070BWW washer. S/N# LD150598
Bought this GE back in 2002. The problem is when the timer gets to the section where the washer is to drain, it doesn't. If it does not drain than the spin motor will not kick-in. Ran a small load (Little water set on small).
When it came to the time the motor was to drain the soapy water the motor just made noise. (Not a very loud sound). It matters not weather the timer goes through the white section for whites or the dark section for darks, both will not drain the water & like I mentioned than it will not spin. This morning I turned the timer to where the washer should drain before the spin cycle was to kick in & low & behold the washer started to drain. (The drain motor did make a few seconds of noise before it kicked in). Once the water drained the spin cycle kicked in as it should. I found it odd that after my 2nd year service warranty was about to end (2004). GE wanted me to buy another warranty for $245.00 US. Than again in 2005, 2006 & 2007.
Each year a little higher in price. Being the washer is only six years old & this is a major problem & could add up the $$. Thought I'd try here. The home service call is only $74.00 & they say theres a 10% discount on any parts but a motor through a service company will be anything but cheap. Just got the feeling I'm heading for a screwing. I am 100% sure it is not the timer. There are no cloges, all drain lines have been removed & checked for lint build up. Washer is & has always been level. Never over load the washer. So my question is where can I get a price on a replacement drain motor, how to dissasemble the washer to get at the pump/motor & where can I get either parts or a new pump? My last washer was a White westinghouse. Bought new back in 1985 & was still working when it was replaced by this GE in 2002. (Sold it for $50.00). My gas stove is still running, also bought in 1985. I'd like to think I take care of my stuff.
Any help would be great.

    I found nothing that would have impeded the pump from functioning.

    I took out the impeller & cleaned the rubber washer & added some Vaseline. Everything inside was clean. No lint, nothing.

    Re-assembled & ran a cycle (small), as it went into drain she did not pump so I tapped the motor with a rubber mallet.

    (Old army solution). That worked out ok.

    I'm surprised how cheaply this GE pump is considering how massive the main motor is.

    You saved me from spending at least $150.00 US for a service, in-home repair.

    I promise I will not buy another GE washer & that’s sad.

Actually it sounds like there was or is something in the water pump (like a string or metal underwire from a bra). before replacing the water pump i would look inside it and check for foreign objects.

  1. unplug the machine, but leave other hoses connected
  2. use a butter knife or putty knife to open the front panel; at the top seam between the top panel and the front panel is 2 metal clips (about where the edges of the lid are). push these strait in to release the front panel.
  3. once the front panel is off then you should see the water pump on the right side. it has 2 large black hoses and 2 wires attached to it.
  4. take off the water pump (two 3/8 bolts) and look inside it.

Several items can cause the lack of draining.
If you can get to the drain hose, try lowering to a point that it will drain into a bucket. If it drains the system is not clogged. If you advance the timer and the washer drains this maybe the culprit. The motor can overheat and shut off. I would advance the timer to spin and listen for a hum in the motor and then quiet, a sign that the motor has overheated. If the water drains it sounds like the timer is at fault.
I would first make sure the drain hose is properly installed and not kinked somewhere. In earlier GE's the water drain pump could clog, your manual doesn't indicate that as a defect. Regardless timer, motor and pump are in the cycle to empty the washer water.

Washer not draining
a lot of GE washers use a separate motor/pump assembly that is supposted to drain the tank before it spins. That motor is not very strong and can stall if it gets a little clogged with hair or lint or cloth threads. My dad's did that from tassels from a bed spread that fell off in the wash. You can take the front cover off with a knife blade to push the lock clips in so the cover pulls off.

when you do that you can remove the hoses to the pump and pull the clogged material out.

Washer will not drain GE washer
If you have a top loader, try this.
If it agitates but doesn't spin or pump, it could be that your pump is seized or something is stuck in it. The agitator is operated by a different motor. Turn OFF the power. and remove the front vertical panel by inserting a drywall knife in a the top right about 4" in from edge at the joint 1" down from the top, push the clip back to release that corner, get another knife and do the same to the left top corner, the pull the top of the front panel and swing towards you, then lift off and remove. Discount the two hoses to the pump, one from the drum the other that goes to the back. Be ready for a considerable amount of water to come gushing out, use a hose to direct to a floor drain. Check to see if something is stuck in the pump or the hoses, remove it. Check to be sure the impeller spins. If you found something restricting the flow or pump, remove it and re assemble. If the impeller won't spin easily, then you need a new pump.

Remove blockage in the pump. Re-assemble and test.

It spins, but doesn't pump If your washer spins but doesn't pump the water out, the drain line is probably clogged. In many washers, a small sock or other piece of clothing can get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. If the clothing gets between the tubs, it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump--or even into the pump itself. If it's in the pump, you need to remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out.

To remove the sock from the outer tub port, open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then, using needle-nose pliers, try to grab and remove the clothing through the port.

Sometimes you can't remove the stuck clothing from below. Then you have to remove the agitator, top of the outer drum shield, and inner clothes tub. This isn't easy to do--and you may need special tools--so you might be happier getting a qualified appliance repair technician to do the job.

If the drain line isn't plugged, the problem may be with your pump. Even if the pump appears to be turning, the internal impeller may be broken. If so, you need to replace the pump.

It doesn't spin or pump If your washer doesn't spin or pump water out but the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley. If so, you need to replace the pump. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it.

It pumps, but the water returns If the water that pumps out of the machine goes back into the machine after the spin cycle, your washer may be siphoning the water from a laundry tub that has a slow drain, back into the washer. The usual remedy for this is to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is something stuck in the drain?) Also, check for these problems:

  • If the drain hose reaches more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub, cut off the excess.


  • If your drain hose is lower than the washer's cabinet, install an air gap/siphon break assembly.

not draining your washer at all, pump may be bad or no power to pump, take the drain hose out of the "stand-pipe" where water enters the sewer drain, and lower to floor and see if water drains by gravity if only slowly your pump or hose may have a slug of crud in it blocking drainage to sewer pipe

Ge triton won't drain
Well, I haven't heard from anyone from this site yet, but I did talk to Mike Anderson of Anderson Appliance Repair in Clinton, Ten. He told me how to test the solenoid (should read 40 ohms at 1X on a multi tester). Check that the float at the bottom left corner is working and finally test the wires going into the motor (my motor shut down the moment the machine hit the drain cycle). Sure enough, I get 110 volts throughout and 0 at the drain cycle. He says it needs a new timer. If you try to clean it you'll have little springs and things shooting out. Drain pump starts and stops prior to final spin cycle
Jayron, is the motor jogging? start to spin, stop, start to spin stop. If so, your motor is jogging between the high and low start windings. The motor during spin should start on the high speed windings and stay there until most of the water is drained. GE came out with a new motor, harness and run cap because of this. If you have a meter, there should be a white and white/red wire going to the motor. If you have a steady 120V and it's doing this jogging, replace the motor with the kit...Let me know if this the issue, Catriver..post back.
