Most 49.XXXX errors usually indicate a firmware error. The firmware requires updating. You can do this by visiting hp.com and downloading the proper version firmware.

You can send the firmware update simply by downloading a version of a print to file software. This is by far the easiest way to send the file to the printer in my opinion. Even if the printer is networked, you can easily perform this update. DO NOT disconnect, power down, or send anything to the printer while the update is downloading. Send me email if you want some specific instructions to [email protected]. I hope this helps.

Got the same error on a HP Laserjet 2430. Firmware upgrade didn't resolve it. The above steps did fix it! Thanks.

Any of the 49 errors are from the formatter board, you may need new memory, or a new board. The machine doesn't reset from this error without a new board.

I would start by removing the old driver, and make sure the print Que is empty.
Did you upgrade the firmware? If not I would.

Replace the fuser unit (they last about 75K pages in my experience)

4. Turn the printer back on

51.20 error message on HP laserjet 4250n printer

It is an error with the laser scanner unit
1 Press ( SELECT button) to continue.
2 Turn the printer off and then on.
3 Reseat the connectors between the
laser/scanner and dc controller
PCA (J83 and J84).
4 Replace the laser/scanner assembly.
See Laser/scanner assembly.
5 Replace the dc controller PCA. See
Dc controller PCA.

If nothing from above works and the printer is no longer in warranty, it is possible if the printer is being used in a very dirty or dusty enviornment that the lens and optics of the laser/scanner are so full of debris that the beam detect error occurs. You can remove the top cover and the big black box in the center is the laser scanner assembly. Remove the screws securing the top cover of the laser scanner and remove and clean up all the optics to include the main mirror in the front. I usually use a damp q tip and for the mirror I slide up from toner cartrdige shutter area and observe from the top as it cleans the mirror. Removing the complete assembly on this model is not easy since there are a couple of cables going to the dc controller which are difficult to remove so removing the top of the assembly is easier.

Setting margins on printer

Hi,
Well, by now you may have found the solution, however, make sure that in MS WORD under File > Page Setup > A4 is selected, and if you still this prompt (error), just click on OK and proceed with printing.

The Laserjet Printers are capable to print upto 5mms from the edge of the border.

Firmware Error 49 by Stephen (edited 3/20/07 12:29 PM) reply + / -
It could be a bad job.

First disconnect it from your network and any PC it might be attached to.

Power cycle it, then if it goes to ready status try the built in test pages, do they work?

If the printer will go to ready status and you have a parallel cable with the proper connector, then you can try upgrading the firmware from a PC, you can also try to upgrade the firmware over the network.

Cold Reset HP Laser Jet 4250n by Stephen (3/20/07 1:03 PM) reply + / -
Try a cold reset, it will reset the JetDirect settings, but it's the next step.

Cold Reset:

Power off printer, wait about 5 seconds, then power it on, when asterisks start appearing on the display press and hold the check mark until all 3 lights come on solid, then use arrow keys to find cold reset and push check mark to perform the reset.

Thank You so much for your help... but that didn't work either. Same error code showed up.

Then you probably need to replace the formatter.

Do you have another printer you can swap parts with?

There is a slim chance the memory DIMM is bad, you can try it with the DIMM removed, if there is more than one DIMM you can try installing just one and then the other.
-----------------------------

A 49 error indicates that the formatter could not understand or execute an instruction within a file or cannot interface with an accessory, DIMM, or EIO device. Troubleshooting 49 errors is done through process of elimination. First determine if the printer functions in a stand-alone mode then test communications to the printer.

These errors can be divided up into two categories; the associated troubleshooting depends on the circumstance the 49 errors are occurring.

A 49 error is always followed by Hexadecimal numbers, for instance, 49.00FF. The Hex code is a memory address. Most Hex codes are not documented.

Re: HP Laser Jet 4250n by dmzcompute (3/20/07 2:26 PM) reply + / -
I do not see anywhere where the printer has been disconected from everything. If you have not done so already disconnect every cable from the printer with the exception of the power cable and turn the printer back on and see if you get the error and if not report back here for further instructions.

You might also try disabling the embedded JetDirect.

To disable the embedded LAN port

Turn the printer power off.

Power on the printer and watch for the memory count to begin.

Hold down the SELECT (Checkmark) button, when you see the memory count begin.

Continue holding down the SELECT (Checkmark) button until all three printer control-panel lights flash once and then remain on. This might take up to 10 seconds.

After the message SELECT LANGUAGE appears on the display, press the UP ARROW button or the DOWN ARROW button until EMBEDDED LAN DISABLED appears on the display

Press the SELECT (Checkmark) button. The printer then continues its power-on sequence with the embedded LAN disabled.

If this works the JetDirect built into the formatter is bad, you can either replace the formatter, or buy an JetDirect to install in an EIO slot.

Re: HP Laser Jet 4250n by Trev Pearson (3/20/07 10:08 PM) reply + / -
The only other thing to try, before spending money, is to get the network administrator to clear the print queue for that particular printer and then turn it on.

The theory being that a 'corrupt' print job is still in the system and as soon as the printer is turned on, that 'corruption' floods the network card with garbage which promptly goes 49.

If the printer comes 'ready', great. Then do a firmware upgrade. If not, then you will have to spend money on a new formatter.

Trev

Feb 14, 2008 00:50:36 GMT Hi,

I have an HP 2420d printer, and I keep getting the following error message:

49.2F80 SERVICE ERROR

How can I fix this? It usually goes away when I turn it off and back on, but it's annoying to have to do it so often.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Remove it. razmat lighthouse.gif Feb 16, 2008 15:23:50 GMT Unassigned you could try to unplug from everything and just have it plugged by itself into the wall and maybe print some test pages to see if the error comes up at any of those points.then hook up via parallel and try to send some print jobs ,then hook via USB and send some print jobs and see if the error comes up at any of those points.this can can help narrow things down and point to the network or elsewhere.

like the previous poster said, sometimes something on the formatter can cause this issue, like a hard disk or network card, where removing these ,at least temporariliy to test can help.

if you have the internal network port(usually on the "n" model),then try a cold reset.if you have a hard disk you can also use a skip disk load option by holding the down arrow while powering on until all led's come on ,then use the arrows to scroll to "skip disk load".cold reset is similiar except, hold down the select(checkmark) button while powering on until all led's come on and the language option pops up on the display.then scroll to cold reset.
