Printer does not pull the paper from the tray even tho the document was successfully sent to the printer. I get an error message saying "out of paper" although there is paper in the tray. Why is this? How can I fix it?

Take a close look at the printer and the paper tray. The error usually means that the paper output tray is closed (or something is blocking it from opening). Remove the object blocking the paper tray and pull it fully open (including the extension). Then turn off the printer and turn it back on. The error can also occur when a book is being scanned that blocks the paper tray.
Someone has probably sent you a fax on 8 1/2 x 14 inch (legal size) paper. Pull down the manual hand feed tray which is located above the regular paper cassettes and place some legal size paper in it. Hopefully the fax will be outputted and the message will go away. Good luck.
sometimes the paper can get stuck way at the back of the machine out of sight and it might be all crinkled up and stuck , the noise that you are hearing at start up is probably the rollers going through a pre-spin check that identifies problems like a paper jam etc you will have to remove any covers and expose as much of the internals of the machine as possible and open and trays and compartments that will allow you to use a torch to inspect the paper route and follow it path
Try putting more than one sheet of labels in the paper tray. Even if you're printing one label, it helps the printer grab the paper without that error somehow. If you're already using more than one sheet, I don't know. Good luck either way!!! :)
Problem may be the paper tray. You don't say what kind of printer you have and my psychic abilities are nil. The paper tray has sensors that tell the printer what size paper is in the tray. Make sure that the tray guides are set correctly. By the way all paper trays are "in" trays. Print out a config sheet to see what size paper the printer is set up for for each tray.
Pretty
sure your paper tray button is set to get paper from the bottom paper
cassette which is the tray that slides into the bottom of the printer.
If
you switch the paper tray selection button* to use the rear feed tray
you'll probably find it will print faxes successfully or you can put
paper in the cassette tray...
*The paper tray selection
button is just under (and slightly right of) the "Memory Card" button
and has an icon image of the printer with two LED's (top and bottom).
These lights indicate which of the trays is currently selected...
