Toshiba 46H84 turning off by itself AND all BLUE screen with Black Dot in Center

I have a Toshiba 46H84 that is only a couple of months over 2 years
old. It has been working just GREAT until about a week ago, that is.
With no warning whatsoever, the TV just turned off by itself. Just
before it went off the screen went to Blue and a light colored
yellow dot appeared in the middle. At this same time the "power"
button on the set startded blinking (red). I could not turn the set
off or on with the remote OR by pushing the button itself. I
unplugged the set, waited about five minutes. I then plugged it back
in, and turned it on by pushing the button on the set. It came on
just long enough to see the blue screen and a VERY faint picture
behind that blue. The dot had turned to black and then all of a
sudden the blue(and the picture) just vanished into the black dot
and the set clicked off. I have unplugged the set (as instructed by
Toshiba) and left it unplugged for up to five hours, just to plug it
in and the process starts all over.

Toshiba tells me they don't think it is the picture tube but have no
idea what it might be and OF COURSE, since the warranty is out for
two months now, they don't want to lend an opinion. This thing is
BIG and we live so far out in a rural area that the closest repair
is over 40 miles away and we can't afford to have a servive person
come that distance.

ANY SUGGESTIONS??? Would it be worth having fixed OR should we just
look into getting another set? What happened to Televisions lasting
over 20 years?? Are they all just "throw aways" now.

Toshiba 46H84 powers on with blue screen and then powers off leaving the red LED flashing.

The blue CRT appears to be shorting out, which shuts down the set. To confirm, perform the following steps.
    1. Unplug the power cord from the TV.
    2. Remove the speaker grille (lower front of the TV). There are two clips on each side and two more in the center that you have to pop off.
    3. Remove the access panel. There are several hex screws holding in place.
    4. Carefully plug the TV back in and power up. Do NOT touch anything inside due to high voltage. Watch for the blue CRT (the one to the right) to light up for a few seconds and then go out.
    5. If this happened then unplug the TV set.
    6. Carefully remove the printed circuit board (PCB) from the CRT. There are 3 clips holding the PCB in place.
    7. Once the PCB is completely disconnected, again carefully plug in the TV power cord and power up. This time it should work, but with no blue.
    8. Power down and unplug the power cord. Will need to replace either the CRT or the PCB or the power supply.

SOURCE: toshiba 46H84 tv turned off light blinking

The TV is on protect mode.

Try first leaving the TV power cord unplugged for some times, let say one hour or so.

Also ensure that the fault is not coming from a faulty receiver box sending bad signal, check if you get same problem with no receiver box or dvd connected.

If that does not work, and you keep having a flashing led on front of the TV, and tv turning off by itself after a while, that indicates a fault condition.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the TV goes on protection there are only two possible reasons.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or abroken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , startingthe flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then theTV will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

Common faults that can occur are a blown capacitor on power board, a convergence IC has blown, or a fault on Digital board.

Check also the video cable or any external connection cable, if the cable is shorting, or the connector is bad, you can get same flashing state because of the video cable.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

If you want to repair at your own expenses, just locate any good qualified repairer.

Lines on my toshiba model 46h84 projection tv has lines on screen until it warms up What could be causing thi. Once it warms up the picture is fine. which takes about 10 minutes

I have the same issue with mine which started a couple of months ago and has only gotten worse. I've been googling this and found that it could be the convergence module(s), apparently there are 1-3 of them and ALL of them should be replaced. I'm not sure on a cost, but I'm guessing it won't be cheap. I think we are just going to get a new tv, with the prices for LCD's coming down this will probably be a cheaper option. Good Luck :)

Large dot in the middle of the projected display

there is a burned-in spot on the polerizer light filter for the blue lcd. it makes sure the light is blue coming through, that's why it is black on a blue screen, and yellow when the red and green are the only light showing through. it needs to be replaced. pat # PFiLW0213CEZZ.

Blue crt assmbly maybe?

its very possible that the blue CRT is horting the set out. Heres how you can test it. Remove the speaker grille and access panel behind the grille and you will see the crts. remove the blue crt circuit board from the end of the blue crt and make sure it isnt touching anything then try powering up the set if it doesnt shut down then you have found the problem and you will need a new crt. or you can switch the blue circuit with the green and try it iwth the blue on green and the green on the blue then if the screen turns green before shutting down you will know that its a problem in the blue drive circuit and not the crt. lety me know if you need further assistance.

SCreen turns red then shuts off

The 46H84 has 3 CRTs instead of a lamp. Red, Green and Blue. Your red CRT is shorting out shutting down the set. Here is how you test that theory. Remove the speaker grille, there will be an access panel behind the grille remove that and you will see the CRTs red is usually on the left. hit the power momentarally to locate which tube is red. then power down and unplug the power cord. Carefully remove the tubes Circuit board. ( you may have to carefully slice the glob of silicone applied at the factory to get the circuit board off) Once you have the circuit board off the Red CRT make sure it isnt touching anything and try powering up the set. If the set stays on and the other 2 CRTs light up. That tells you the RED crt is shorted and thats whats shutting your set down. Let me know if I can assist you further.
