My dad has Sony Model KDL-42V4100 that is about 3 years old. It has a smoky vertical streak that almost looks like water has run down the screen---any ideas on what it is or how to fix it. It appears some more smoky streaks are appearing across the top of the screen. Nothing has been spilled on the screen. They are not visible when the tv is off---they are most visible on a blue screen. Thanks for any advice and opinions!

Ok after over a year i figured out it was the tcon board. Good luck getting finding one. The first one i ordered from shopjimmy was faulty, didn't realize until after the warranty so i ate the cost of it (honestly i thought that it was good and there was another thing wrong with the tv) so i said wtf and bought one last week from ebay. Bam! it works great!!!

man, same problem here!! we got this tv, the same model as the one you have, we got this last 2008.. so basically its already 2years.. and last night.. i got this white stripes that are vertical then suddenly shuts down.. i dont know what to do.. im pretty sure sony wont cover this cuz its already more than a 1yr we got this tv, but still.. i cant believe tv like this has a short life span.. our old box tv was even more better.. it lasted 6yrs!!!

this problem is coming from your digital video board this board is the one in charge of displaying the image into the screen get the part number of the board to find the right part I found a only store that has a lot of your tv parts

That symptom may cause by the main board or t-con board, I suggest you do software up grade first.

I also have a 2 yr old Sony KDL32xbr4 that now has multi-colored vertical lines on the screen. I contacted Sony and they say they have "no known issue" of this sort for this model. I find this rather puzzling since I have found numerous postings on the web. They told me to try the factory reset. Whatever. Might as well have said "don't buy a Sony". 2 years! $1300 for a tv and it lasts 2 years! Makes me sick to my stomach.

This model of SONY TV uses a Samsung display panel, the problem you have is the panel went bad.

SONY was offering an extended warranty to change the panel free, please call SONY to check it out that if they still offer the free replacement.

The panel or TCON board has failed, the solution is the same replace the panel. Not worth the cost, get a new TV
