Hi, we just bought a new Samsung ES30 still camera with a new 4GB SDHC 4 Silicon Power SD card. We have formatted the SD card in the camera as per the instructions on page 76 of the User Manual which came on the CD with the camera. The issue is that the photos taken do not get stored on this memory card eg the folder is empty when checking the memory card for its content on a PC by connecting the camera to the PC via the supplied USB cable. When the SD card is connected directly to the PC via a USB memory card reader there is a folder named DATABASE but no files are located under there, it is empty. The memory card is shown to have a capacity of 3.68GB, and files can be placed on it from the computer, and read back fine, e.g. the memory card is functioning as a memory storage device. On the camera, the number of pictures left (968), which is show on the 3inch LCD screen, goes down by one the moment a picture is taken, but after approx 1 second or so goes back up again, e.g. the net result is the same number of pictures are available to be taken. We have tried a 16GB SanDisk 4 Ultra (15MBps) SD card, and that card appears to work fine, e.g. the files, or pictures, can be seen stored on the memory card when plugging the camera into the PC, and the files contain the pictures just fine. So the camera itself appears to work just fine. So it appears that both products work fine, the camera and the SD card, but together they dont. Could it be a compatibility issue, or something else? The cameras LCD screen does not report a problem, except that the number of pictures available to take stays constant. The Samsung User Manual, which comes as a pdf on the CD with the camera, does not state what the speed of the SD memory card should be. Would you be able to help us? Thanks, Peter

You may need to try some photo recovery software to rescue the pictures, here are some for your option.

SOURCE: My Samsung Digimax A7 camera

The Digimax A7 may not be compatible with "High Capacity" SD Cards (SDHC). If this is the case you will need to locate an SD card that is 2GB or less in size as anything larger than this is a high capacity card.

Bought a new sony sd/sdhc memory card 8gb and it will not format/load for my camera--what do I need to do?

The problem is that your camera is only compatible with SD cards, not SDHC cards. You bought a larger card for your older camera, not noticing that it was SDHC (or not knowing that it mattered). The new card doesn't work, not because it or the camera is broken, but because it's not compatible.

Cards up to 2Gb are generally SD.
Cards of 4Gb are generally SDHC.
Cards over 8Gb have to be SDHC.

(There are exceptions. Sometimes, manufacturers make 4Gb SDHC cards but some have errors; they disable half of the chip and sell it as 2Gb, but it's still SDHC. 4Gb cards are almost always SDHC because they're cheaper, but 4Gb SD cards do exist. They are so rare that I've even seen a guru on this site claim they don't. I did own one once, but it was very expensive and turned out to be so unreliable that I had to return it. I don't recommend looking for one, because of the problems.)

Your solution is to go find a 2Gb card, and be extra sure that it doesn't say "SDHC" on it.

I've tried formatting a new san disk 4gb card and still reads "unable to use card" what do i do?

You haven't told us what kind of camera it is, but I can guess at the problem. There are two possibilities.

1. Your camera will only read SD cards, not SDHC cards. You've just bought a new memory card, not noticing that it was SDHC. The new cards don't work in your camera, not because they or the camera are broken, but because they're not compatible.

Cards up to 2Gb are generally SD. Cards over 8Gb have to be SDHC. 4Gb cards can be either SD or SDHC, but are almost always SDHC because they're cheaper. (I would avoid the rare, expensive, and problematic 4Gb SD cards.)

Your solution is to go find a 2Gb card, and be extra sure that it doesn't say "SDHC" on it. (If it does, it probably means that they made a 4Gb card, but there were some error locations and so they disabled half of it and packaged it as a cheap-brand 2Gb.)

2. You formatted the card NTFS, whereas the camera needs FAT32. You can format the card using Windows, but there is a complication: Windows defaults to "NTFS" when formatting, but memory cards normally use FAT32. Before you attempted this, you should have connect the card, and checked the 'properties' on the drive that appears. It probably said "FAT32". In this case, you could have gone ahead and formatted the card, but be sure that you chose "FAT32" from the drop-down list. If you format it NTFS, your camera won't be able to read it!

In this case your solution would be to format the card again, but using the FAT32 format.

You might find it useful to check your camera on dpreview (dot) com, and see if the memory card type is shown as just SD or SD/SDHC.

The Optio S4 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible. You need to go with cards 2GB and smaller.

I bought a 4GB Memory Card for my Samsung Digimax D53. I put it the camera and Try to format it, but it says CHECK SD CARD. I tried another 1GB memory card and it worked. I know that the problem is with my...

Your problem is that your camera only takes standard SD cards up to a maximum of 2GB. The card you have bought is likely to be a 4GB SDHC model. SDHC is a later development of SD; SDHC compliant devices can still use older SD cards, but SD-only devices cannot use SDHC. This is a hardware limitation so there is no way at all to use an SDHC card in your camera.

Note that if your 4GB card is definitely an SD and not an SDHC then it's still incompatible with your camera: very few standard SD devices were ever made with the firmware and hardware to handle the different memory addressing architecture used by the larger capacity card. Some cameras did have firmware updates to allow the larger SD card to be used, but yours is not one of them.

Your only fix is to sell your card (or keep it for another device) and to buy a regular SD card no larger than 2GB maximum capacity.

Just put in new san disk 4gb memory card and receiving error message - memory card error. I unlocked memory on card itself (that little gray sliver that goes up and down) What gives

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

Same as yours

The Z740 supports only MultiMediaCards & SD Memory Cards. 4GB and larger SD cards are usually SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) types - and bear the SDHC mark on the label. These cards are not compatible with this camera. Use only MMC and SD cards. SD cards are 2 GB and under - although *some* 4 GB cards are marked as SD too; these cards may or may not work. If you purchase a 4 GB SD (not SDHC) card, make sure that it can be returned if it doesn't work reliably in your camera.
