There is a start-up capacitor beside the compressor. When this capacitor fails, the compressor keeps clicking on /off.The capacitor is not very expensive. It costs near to $25.But if replacing the capacitor is not helping, then its faulty compressor causing this. The compressor is out of refrigerant gas and its getting short internally. You will have to get the compressor replaced. If replacing the capacitor not helped. The parts like startup capacitor and compressor can be bought from online sites like repairclinic.com or from sears parts direct site.----------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
First off... unplug the unit for 30 minutes and let the compressor / coolant system stabilize and cool. Then plug it in and see if the unit starts.
Things that cause this symptom:
1. Momentary power loss
2. Compressor PTC relay failure
3. KliXon thermal overload failure (yours is working i.e clicking)
3. Run capacitor failure
4. Locked Compressor Rotor / 1 of 2 windings open in the compressor / bearing failure of the compressor. (Any of these require compressor replacement)
Without your complete model number I can not pass you replacement parts sources.
The repair process will be (even if done by a tech):
1. Compressor winding to compressor case resistance test. Resistance checks from terminals C to S, C to R and terminals [C, R and S to ground / chassis (
2. PTC Relay / thermal over load replacement
3. Run capacitor replacement
4. Locked Rotor Amperage Test (checks amperage to see if the amps being used is equal to the LRA value on the compressor label.
5. Compressor replacement if none of the above resolve the issue.
Usually the PTC, thermal overload, and run capacitor are all replaced at the same time. (Can be up to $100.00 in parts depending upon model but this a must do process with your symptom.)
If you require further assistance I must have your model number when you respond here.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
SOURCE: FAN WORKS, BUT FRIDGE AND FREEZER NOT COOLING,COMPRESSOR KEEPS CLICKING ON AND OFF
sound like the start components are weak on the unit. you can get new start components or get a three n one control that repalces the starting components and all that you have to do is wire it up just like the diagram on the bag. or the lem could be low voltage gpoing to the refriger ator. The manufactures reccommend that you never run a refrigerator on a extenstion cord of any kind. It is also a good Idea to take the refrigerator electrical outlet off of any type of GFI receptical of any kind. you don't want to come home to a defrosted mess just because the outlet decided at that Tibme to trip.
