The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. This video will walk you thru the correct procedure for testing an oven igniter. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

I have a hotpoint gas oven the will preheat , but not maintain temperature

Hello,

That pretty much sounds like a weak igniter thats causing your troubles, while the igniter first comes on to preheat the oven its seems to be ok,yet once it has been on for a while the igniter is getting weak and not allowing the gas to flow properly once its hot. By replacing the igniter the oven will maintain tempature.

Hotpoint gas oven

This is an indication of low gas pressure to the oven. This condition may improve when other gas equipment is turned off and worsen when demands increase such as during cold periods where heating plants are running. Contact your local gas company to check pressures at the burners and adjust the incoming pressure to the oven accordingly.
