Not all HDMI provides sound, older versions of HDMI are video only. If you're using a laptop you could review the model to see if it has sound support, if it's a desktop computer or a graphics card you can again check to see if there is support for audio. If there isn't and you have a desktop computer, you could upgrade your graphics card to a newer model with HDMI audio support.
If it is just showing a snowy picture then the heads will need to be cleaned either buy carefully cleaning them manually or using a head cleaning tape. If you are getting no image at all from the VCR such as the on screen graphics then check your connections from the TV to the VCR.

first have you on board graphic card?
second what kind of sound is comming out (did you mean system is started but you can not see it or only is caming some beeps from MB)
if no graphic card onboard, try to identify is startin your system or not if yes you have problem with monitor , if no change your vga and take other one because is blowed or defective.
Try looking at the back of the TV and ensuring that the incoming cable is in the correct input. If you have audio and video cables make sure they are placed in the same input. What type of cable do you have directv or comcast?
