The same thing happened with my Indesit WD1. I now use a flathead screwdriver to open the door. There's a horizontal ****, about an inch high between the lever and the door (sorry, this is hard to describe). If you insert the screwdriver in the gap as far as it will go (at about a 45 degree angle to the door), then gently press the handle of the screwdriver towards the machine, you should feel the door release.
Unplug machine, take lid off and locate the door lock. You will have to use a small screwdriver or something to release the lock. Then replace your door handle.
