This is a CD-ROM drive. CD drives will not read DVDs. You need a DVD-RW if you're going to be burning DVDs or if you're only going to be watching DVDs then a DVD-ROM drive would work.
Try to upgrade the driver for the DVD player. This is done in the Device Manager. Upgrade or reinstall the software used to play the DVD. One of the best players for DVD and all sorts of other media is the VLC player - a free download.
The unit can recognize that a disc has been loaded but can not read the contents. This can be as simple as a dirty lens or more drastic like failing optics. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to correct the problem and a music CD will play OK, then the optics are failing. DVDs require more laser power to read than a music CD.
This is a link to a page that tells you how to unlock this player. It involves downloading a file then burning to CD which you then put in the player. Hope this helps.
