The most common cause for a clothes dryer drum to turn slowly or not start turning at all, is usually due to a faulty 'start capacitor'.
The capacitor stores electricity to help get everything turning from the stopped position. Once turning, less effort is required by the motor to keep everything turning.
Other components like a broken drive belt, burnt out electric motor, broken wire among other things etc also need to be considered.

SOURCE: dryer tries to start - then stops and beeps PLEASE HELP
Check the exhaust hose. If the dryer isn't venting properly it will either stop or the heater will turn off and the clothes will remain wet. If the hose is not clogged check the wall vent tube.
SOURCE: Dryer Problem
Grinding noise most likely due to the front drum bearings worn out - result is the metal drum making contact with the rim of the from panel.
This requires a total disassembly of the dryer to investigate & likely replacement of the front slipper pads (dry nylon slipper bearings 4 x ).
This will only be a succesful repair if you stopped using the dryer the moment it started screeching.
If you have let it run, the metal-on-metal will have gouged the edge of the drum and will rip up any new replacement bearing pads.
Do not attempt this unless you are a very competent handyperson. Many screws lost, cut fingers and swear words will ensure if you are not confident in approaching this job, so either toss the dryer or get a competent repairman to do the job.

SOURCE: my fisher and paykel dryer ( mod# ED56 ) wont start, power is on
I had this same problem with my Dryer. It is making the few quick beeps because it thinks the door is still open. Near the bottom of the opening to the dryer there is a sensor switch that gets pushed in when you shut the door. Try holding the switch in with a knife or something and then start the dryer with the door open to check if that is the problem.
After i did this, i closed the door and my dryer started as normal.
