The DVR-518 uses three AAA batteries. You can use either disposable or rechargeable batteries. If you choose to use rechargeables, you will have to charge them separately, outside the camera. Any battery charger will work, as long as it's compatible with the type of batteries you choose.

You can get more information about the camera, including the manual and software, at

How do i "Install Vivitar Experience Image Manager" for my dvr 781hd vivitar without having a cd rom on my laptop?

You can do this. Get an external USB CD /DVD player recorder to install the software or you can read the sd card directly from your PC if it has a card reader in it. If it doesn't you can buy an external reader for a few dollars and then you can download the pictures that way. You will find that downloading files from the sd card with a reader is much faster than using a cable.

I have Vivitar DVR 518,I recieved from Newport Pleasure coupons in about Nov. 2010. I cut into the package, but didn't realize it had a CD in it. Also,I need intructions for my camcord and need to know...

The DVR 518 uses SD and SDHC cards up to 8GB in size.

You can download the manual and request the software from the manufacturer's web site at
http://www.vivitar.com/products/2/digital-video-recorders/361/dvr-518

The best way to download videos from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy videos from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any video cataloging program.

OK first i need the users manual. i need to know how to charge my vivitar dvr 518 . then i can't find my cd and i don't know how to download it without the cd.

The manual can be found at: http://www.vivitar.com/products/2/digital-video-recorders/361/dvr-518

It uses AAA batteries, so make sure they're rechargeable first. If so you can put them in a standard battery charger. Some models, not sure of this one specifically, will charge when plugged into USB, so you can try that as well.

If the software you need is the "Vivitar Experience" for downloading the images and videos, there is a link on the bottom of the site above to download it.

Please leave a review of this solution. Thanks!

More info on the vivitar DVR 518

Here's what a support person on this website had to say about the manual.

I have the same situation. The tutorial on the enclosed CD says to download the manual from the vivitar web site but, as you indicated, the web site does not recognize the model. I called their support number and was given some BS about there being download information on the CD/DVD if you go into explore and look at properties (these 'support' people obviously have no computer experience). Anyhow, they said that they woudl ship me a new disc that has the manuals on it. Time will tell but this seems to be the only approach that has gotten me anywhere.
So sounds like your best chance is to contact Vivitar to order the manual, unless you find some good soul that will be kind enough to make you a copy. Good luck!

And yes, it is bad packaging. Vivitar has started putting stickers on the packages warning that there is a CD inside.

The Vivitar website for camcorders is here:

But I don't see a dvr 518 listed. If you meant to type dvr 510 then here is the link to your users manual download:
