the card needs to be formatted either by the camera or by a PC prior to it being used. You may have to do a reset of the camera to get it to behave normally. Keep in mind, that doing this will erase anything saved.
What size is the memory card. If it's larger than 4GB then it won't work in the 5118. Try using another card. Don't format it in your computer but do format it in the camera before trying to take pictures.

From page 145 of the A520 user manual, it appears that the largest SD memory card that this camera is able to use is a 512MB SD memory card. The manual is dated "2004", so this size limitation is not unusual for a camera of this era.
If you've purchased anything larger, there is a good chance that it won't work with this model camera.
Try using the "format" option in the setup menu. That should wipe any "bad" data off the card. Beware! It will erase anything you already have on the card, so make sure there isn't anything on you need to keep.
