Its direction of travel is dependent on which way the spray arm spins. Was the arm bent in someway that might make it spin the wrong direction? The arm nozzles are pointed the wrong direction. If there is an adjustment that's where you need to change its direction of travel.
The wheels are driven by the spinning of the water wand. Turning the tips so the wand spins either clockwise or counter clockwise will determine which direction your sprinkler will travel. If it's going backwards, turn the tips so the wand spins in the opposite direction it is spinning now.
Make sure your spray arms are both pointed in the proper direction to assure forward movement. It will run backward if the spray arms are pointed in the wrong direction.

I have 2 John Deere 4010 traveling sprinklers and they both do the same thing. I took them apart and the plastic worm gear has flat spot on them. I am having difficulty finding replacement parts.
