Just got an RCA TV from a friend. It is the 32 inch DVD combo. The DVD player isn't working. I can slide the DVD in and it will attempt to play it but it can't seem to read it. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Try vith headphones or audio out on the scart .
Try with audio standard in menu options.
try with signal on scart or hdmi input with other source of signal like dvd or cabel recivers.
If there are no sound after this you have to check-replace the audio section in your tv.

choose the 'input' on the remote... and select the dvd

A complete model number would help with giving advice or an answer.

did you try to get a dvd cleaner to clean out your dvd player.

Did you turn on the input of the tv to receive 'external' input.? Did you plug the DVD into the right input?

PROGRAMMING DEVICE CONTROL
The One For All 3 Device Universal Remote Control is preprogrammed at
the factory to operate an RCA TV, a Toshiba DVD player, and a Motorola
cable box.To control devices other than the default brands,perform the following

1. Turn on a desired device (e.g.,VCR or DVD player) and, if
applicable, insert media (e.g., cassette or disc).
NOTE: Please read steps 2 through 4 completely before proceeding.
Highlight or write down the codes and device you wish to program
before starting step 2.
2. On the remote control,press a device key once (i.e., DVD/VCR,
CBL/SAT,or TV).
NOTE: To program control of a VCR, PVR (or DVR),TV/VCR Combo,
or TV/VCR/DVD Player Combo press DVD/VCR once.After programming
a VCR Combo device, you will be able to control channel selection,
volume, and VCR functions.
NOTE: To program control of a DVD Player,DVD Player/VCR
Combo, or TV/DVD Player Combo, press DVD/VCR once.After programming
a DVD Combo device, you will be able to control channel
selection, volume, and DVD functions.

3. Press and hold SET until the LED (red light) blinks twice,
then release SET.
4. Use the Manufacturer’s Codes (starting on page 18) to
locate the type of device and brand name and then enter
the first four-digit code for your device. If performed correctly,
the LED will blink twice.
NOTE: If the LED did not blink twice, repeat steps 2 through 4 and enter
the same code again.
5. Aim the remote control at the device and press POWER
once.The device should turn off. If it does not, repeat
steps 2 through 5, trying each code for your brand until
you find one that works. If it still doesn’t work, try
Searching For Your Code on next page.
NOTE: If the device does not have a POWER key, press PLAY.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each device you want to control.

is the dvd a store bought disc or a burnt dvd? If the disc is a store bought disc I unfortunately can't help you. But if the dvd you are trying to play is burned from dvd burner you are most likely using the wrong type of burnable dvd. There are two types of dvd's you can burn, DVD-R and DVD+R. You need to make sure which one you dvd player can play, some play one or the other, some play both. I have also heard of some older ones that can't play any type of burned disc. hey lindalu if you and i put our tv's together we might have one whole working tv/vcr/dvd combo that plays in color! Seriously though, i feel your pain. RCA i'm not impressed.
