When the camera is powered on, the lens will "open & close" multiple times, then an error message will pop up instructing me to
"Turn the power off and on again" ... when I do, it just does the same thing over and over.

Welcome to Fixya Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts.... Here's what you can try: Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad.Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon. Thank you
The internal plastic gears which govern the lens opening and closing are either damaged or out of alignment - this happens when a camera is dropped or has any other form of physical interaction for which it is not designed.
Unfortunately
a "lens error" message is not something that you will be able to fix. This error indicates a system failure and requires the
camera to be sent in for servicing and repair.
You may find it more cost effective to purchase a new camera as opposed to the repair price on your current camera.
hi u need to get the lens repaired the railing in the lessystem is no correct so pleas dont try to doit or push in .... it will be permanent damage ....get to the shot5 the camera is not broken need small fix....
no you shouldnt repair it yourself it will only make it worse, the lense have become disalligned it can be repaired for you and that is the best option. you can also try gently pulling and twisting the end of the lense and i mean gentle dont twist and pull till it pops. once you have done this switch it off and on and it may have worked to allign the lenses.
turn on
take hold of the end of the lense and gently pull and twist you may hear it click but dont force it then turn it off and on again this may solve the problem.

My S3 in normal home use (no sand, wet or shock) just now displayed the ?Lens cover error? message, with cover only half open. Using a tooth pick I ?eased? it gently and it popped open, took a few trial pictures- fine, but would not fully close unless eased. Now will open and close slowly on own but error message blocks camera use. Then spotted cause - a loose thin sliver of silver trim from below flash around (there?s a gummy substance where it should be). When I first saw one end of this it was between the lens cover and the camera body as tho part of the mechanism, so I did not touch it. Now I know it?s jamming the lens cover operation is it OK to open the camera case to get it out? Questions: (a) Has anyone done this please? (b) Will this clear error message? Thanks.
