I have an ASUS 1005P netbook bought it just over a year ago. Recently it has taken to shutting itself off in battery mode at around 23-31% of remianing power and I have lost any warnings about low battery levels - it used to warn me and then go into hibernate mode. Not now! Fine on mains power so I don't think it's the fan. Any suggestions please

Does the battery indicator on the laptop light up when the charger is plugged in? I have had a few laptops where the chargers had the light on but they weren't actually charging the laptops. Drop me an email with more info or reply on here and I will try my best to help. [email protected]
honestly you've done everything correctly that i could think of. one last thing you could try to root out a problem with the os. is boot the computer from hirens boot disk and load the portable Windows. see if the battery is detected in hirens. then youll know if its a Windows problem or not.
personally i feel the board is the issue but it doesn't hurt to check the complete os.
since its only a week old I would advice taking it back to the dealer instead of trying to work it out yourself. There are ways to reset it but since it has gone into protect mode maybe your fan is not working!!
