Black ink won't print in spite of installing two new Kodak black ink cartridges, thinking maybe it was the cartridge that was defective -
Printing is very faded and can hardly read.
This Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer is only a few months old, from WalMart.

Here are the things you will be asked to try if you call support. They may fix the problems as well. Taking the printhead out and putting it back in is the big helper.
Remove the black and color ink cartridges.
Right above where the black ink cartridge was, in the top left hand corner of the printhead, push up towards the ceiling and you should be able to push a button that releases the printhead.
Place the printhead right back into the printer and push straight back on the back wall.
You should hear a loud snap.
Replace the ink cartridges which should snap as well.
Close the printer.
After about a minute or so the printer will ask you to do a calibration.
Insert a paper and press start.
Scan the calibration sheet.
After that, in the menu, do a printhead clean.
(If this is a 5100, do it in the home center ->? in the top right ->Maintainence ->Clean Printhead.)
Do one basic and one deep.
Print a demo sheet to see if anything has changed.
If the picture looks better, continue to do cleans.
In the event that it does not, the printhead will need to be replaced and since the printer is still under warranty, Kodak specialists will try to overnight you a printhead.
The whole process is short and free.
The number for Kodak AiO Support is 1 800 421 6699.
The KODAK All-in-One Printer uses an advanced built-in printhead. The system is designed to provide excellent image and text quality, while eliminating the need to purchase new printheads every time you replace ink cartridges, and saving you money. The printing system requires that both the black and color ink cartridges be installed to print. If either cartridge is not installed or is out of ink, the printer or printhead will not print correctly.
Install the color a new cartridge, avoid damage to the print head.

Usually answered in minutes!
exact same problem
Same as marilu's.
Very difficult to understand their technicians.
My printer started printing blank pages. I changed both ink cartridges and it started printing faded pages. I pulled the printhead and it still printed faded pages, then the printer started giving me messages to change both cartridges. I called Kodak support at 800-421-6699 x:04 and they were very helpful. They will send me a new printhead and new ink cartridges. I will keep you posted on what happens next.
Same problem. I changed the ink cartridges - took the printhead out and now my machine says I need to change cartridges again. Called kodak, they said they'll send me a new printer and ink cartridges. I will keep you posted on what happens.
I deep cleaned the printhead, removed the printhead (per the Kodak technician's directions) and the problem was resolved for a few weeks. The printer is again not printing black ink. Pages come out blank.

12/16/2008 I have had the same problem several times, and it disappeared when I cleaned the printer head. Today all black printed text was faded even with 50% black in the cartridge. This happened even after several cleaning attempts. The demo sheet did hardly show the black text and photo copy had the same problem.
I hope someone out there can help ud to get this faulty printer to work again - VERE SOON BEFORE IT GOES TO THE DUMP.
Black ink is not being applied when printing photographic images. Black & White text on plain paper is weak and grey looking. When I think back, I believe it was working okay before we switched to Vista. ???
