I have a new Denon AVR 1911 receiver all hooked up to my input devices and output thru a single HDMI cable to my Samsung LCD tv.... problem with getting audio from my DVD player: my DVD player is older w/no HDMI outputs...., so I've connected it to my receiver using the coax audio cable (orange) and the single yellow video analog cable for video.... no problem with the end output for video over the single HDMI cable to the tv.... but cannot get the audio from the coax connection to come thru when I play the DVD... I also tried this initially with analog (red/white) cables for the audio and figured it wouldn't work since I was under the impression that the final HDMI connection cable to the TV can only carry "digital" audio signals and will not upconvert analog audio... hence, switched to the the digital coax audio cable.... still cannot get the audio.... I've fooled around with all the "input assigns" in the Denon setup menus as well as the DVD setup menu for audio (set on "bitstream").... Lastly, I have NO problem getting the audio to the TV when using the Sat/cable source (although that's all input using HDMI cables).. can it possible be that my new Denon has not only a couple of faulty analog input terminals, but a faulty coax audio terminal as well (this doesn't seem very likely)... please help! thanks, Jay M.

Not likely that all those things are faulty.

The TV and DVD player make and model would be helpful to know. I would recommend running its BEST digital audio to the receiver and its stereo analog audio to the TV just in case you want to watch and hear the DVD in a lo-fi setting without the Denon. I generally advocate for connecting anything high-end (audio or video) ONLY to equipment that can use it or enhance it. Otherwise you may just be wasting expensive cable and adding unnecessary hops and connections that can fail.

Why do you want the audio to go from the DVD to the TV through the Denon? Are there no speakers on the Denon? Modern TV's have lots of inputs for the flexibility I recommend but rarely have decent audio or speakers.

thanks dunnbiker for the response... but to answer your question, I do not yet have my 5 surround speakers, and my TV is wall mounted approx. 20 ft from my receiver station... hdmi is already prewired behind the wall from tv back to the receiver... so to keep everything neat and together, I was trying to run, or pass thru, my dvd player through the receiver with audio through
the tv speakers for now until I get my surround speakers....

There is an HDMI Audio-Out-to-the-TV setting (page 57 of the manual).

HDMI, does carry both audio and video. I believe you already answered your own question. I believe the input to your tv from your receiver, is selected to analog or digital, as you can only run one type. If you have a question about whether the receiver is good, simply connect it to a know good receiver. The same goes for the tv. Just plug a set of RCA cables to the input and provide it with another source. If you don't have another source, you can just touch the ends of the cables now going to your tv. If you hear a buzz, you know that the tv input is good as well.

How to connect a denon avr-e400 receiver to a televion

If the DENON has an HDMI output, and your TV has an HDMI input, then use a HDMI cable. Then, use the TV's remote-control to select "source" (or "input") as 'HDMI 2' or 'HDMI 3' (assuming that you have been using 'HDMI 1' to watch TV).

How do I get HDMI cables to sync or talk to each other. We had this problem when we hooked up an Apple TV box to a Denon AVR-E400 and our Sony HD TV. We were told to disconnect all HDMI cables unplug

Personally I would use an RCA cable and hook up the AVR.
((RCA out of TV to AVR audio in))
((cable box HDMI cable output to TV HDMI Input1))
(As far as the AppleTv I would use a separate HDMI Input2)
If your AVR has a dvd or blue ray player Hook up a
HDMI cable out to another Input HDMI3 of the TV
using separate inputs on the tv will allow your surround system to be
used on all modes(CABLE,DVD/BLUERAY,APPLETV)

I'm trying to connect a Samsung HD LCD tv to a Denon AVR1508 receiver using HDMI cable so that the TV sound comes thru the receiver/speakers. which jack do I use (on both the tv and the receiver,

connect the hdmi to the tv (hdmi input 1) and to the receiver (hdmi output) you must make sure that the receiver input settings are assigned correctly. Then hook up all of your devices to the receiver. remember that the 1508 dosent do hdmi upconversion, so if you have any devices that are NOT hdmi, you need to run rca cables from the output of you receiver to the input of your tv. If you have any digital inputs coming out of your devices, i would recommend using them. your 1508 has two inputs that are assignable.
If all of your devices are hooked up to your receiver, and its hooked up to your tv properly, just turn down the sound on your tv, and turn up the volume on your denon!

Connection problem with HDMI cables on Denon AVR-589

Hello,
I want to clairify you install, you sat you have I an HDMI cable running from the Time Warner Cable box to the AVR-589, going in to the TV/CBL input. From the Denon AVR-589, I have an HDMI cable running from the output to my Toshiba RV525U television.

Check the connection at the TV, if as you indicated above you have an HDMI cable from the HDMI out from the Denon to an HDMI output on the TV, if this is the case you need to have that HDMI cable plugged into an input on the TV not an output

Denon AVR 2800 digital hookup to PS3

If your TV has an HDMI input, hook up the PS3 w/an HDMI cable to the TV. This will give you a high def picture (set up the PS3 to output the max resolution your TV displays). That will take care of the video side.

Next hook up an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. In the PS3 menu, you have to change the audio settings to output the sound via the optical cable.

Finally to get sound out of the receiver to the speakers, you have to setup the receiver source input. For example if you setup the PS3 to play thru "VCR" input, then you have to make sure the VCR input is setup to use either optical 1 or optical 2 for sound (whichever one you have the optical cable plugged in from the PS3).
  • I found this solution on a different site... it worked for me. I needed to change the sound settings in my ps3 to optical... then i selected dolby 5.1.... that took care of my sound.

DENON AVR 888

hi dennon guy

you need to connect all your components to your receiver then from the receiver to the tv via the monitor out at the back of your receiver.

you need to make sure they are all the same type of cables. ie if you are using hdmi then make sure the dvd is hdmi output to hdmi input of the receiver then the receiver is hdmi output to the input of the tv. This will give you the best setup.

of course if u use component cables then the same principles applies.

good luck
