Re: model KSM5PSWW How many watts? Are the gears metal or plastic on model KSM5PSWW? How many quarts? Does it have a C dough hook or the S style? Is there a history of repairs on this model? I read that the older models are made better than the new ones. How far back would I have to go to get a reliable one? Was this model made by Hobart or Whirlpool?

Drive Shaft stopped kneading dough

To give the mixer strength it has planetary gears. Something may be wrong in the gear section

Dough hook will not come off

I had the same problem too. There should be maybe 1/4" of loose vertical play of the dough hook (or similar attachment) on the agitator shaft. The hook locks in place rotationally on the shaft until it is pushed up. Before you try to turn the dough hook backwards in an attempt to remove it, push it upwards and hold it up, then rotate.

Hello. I have a Kitchen Aid mixer made by Hobart between 1975 and 1978. It is a stand mixer with a 5-quart bowl that lifts and locks into place. While it was kneading a bread dough, the motor...

Hello Suzann,

I understand that you are having a problem with your Kitchen Aid 5 Quart mixer. It sounds like you have stripped the gears or the worm gear out. Although, it may not be an expensive parts repair it is not an easy task to complete if you are not mechanical enclined. There are many different little gears in these units.

My suggestion would be to take it a local appliance repair shop that works on mixers. If you can tell me the city that you live in I would be more than happy to give you the location of one or two repair shops. As the unit is so old you want to invest in a new unit and keep that one as a reminder of how long Kitchen Aid has been around.

It is a matter of overheating. I have used the same mixer for 8-10 minutes, then put an ice pack on the gear head. The problem is that they cheapened the gearhead in the newer models by using plastic gears. The older ones with metal gears didn't have the same problem, however they put the warning on all models to cover their butts . . . .Just fill a zip lock bag with ice and lay it on top of the gearhead before and during use and you can runit longer without overheating and melting the gears.

Thumping Noise Under Duress

Hi. Your problem probably lies in the plastic transmission housing. This cheap piece of plastic has no business in a high priced mixer, as it has two important shafts that depend on the integrity of this housing for their bearing seats

Remove the top cover from the mixer. At the front top of the mixer is the trans. housing. Examine this housing carefully for cracks. If you find cracks, then you have new damage inside the mixer. If, when you replaced the three gears, I suspect that you did not discover the cracks in the trans. housing and reinstalled it after you replaced the gears, or you may have missed internal damage from the first breakdown.

When this cheap plastic part fails, it can destroy the worm gear, it's bearings and the bearing seats and possibly more.

Kitchenaid's replacement housing is made of metal. Kitchenaid markets these mixers saying it can handle bread dough. The ugly truth is they cannot!

You must open the unit up, remove and save the grease if it's relatively new. You must check every moving part in the mixer's transmission. You have to remove grease from these parts in order to find the damage. When you have the unit repaired, sell it!

I had the same problem with my mixer. I replaced all of the broken parts, and sold it. Since then, I bought a used Hobart N50 ( 5 quart), and an A200 (20 quart) mixers, both of which are commercial mixers. Both of these can handle heavy dough and they do so with ease.

Kitchenaid, to this date, have refused to recall these trans. housings, even though thousands of these cheap plastic housings have failed. Good luck with this saga!

Hi Lisa. Your mixer's plastic transmission housing failed when you were mixing bread dough or cookie dough. When this cheap plastic part fails, it can cause internal damage to the worm gear shaft, worm gear bearings and their seats as well as other internal damage. This kind of damage is not easily found, as the grease inside the transmission must be removed and parts cleaned to fully acertain damage. If the trans. housing was the only part replaced, I would view the repair as only partial.

If the mixer now runs well, without any internal noises during operation, consider yourself fortunate. You could advertise that you have upgraded the mixer (metal housing). A price between $200.00 to $250.00 would be in the ballpark.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45
