My guess would probably be that the lcd in the phone was damaged maybe from temperature changes from where it was assembled to the time that you are holding the phone. You can fix this problem (if it is just that the LCD is damaged) by going here( http://cgi.ebay.com/iPhone-3G-Replacement-LCD-Screen-Display-Repair-Tools-/220501679869?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3356ec9efd ). you will need a very tiny Philips screwdriver and a suction cup that will fit on the glass of the phone. you remove the screws in the bottom of the phone by the dock connector and then take the suction cup to the bottom half of the screen and pull straight up and the digitizer and bezel should pull right up and then from there it should be pretty self explanatory to replace the lcd
switch off
disconnect cable
hold home button
reconnect cable without releasing home button
hope this helps please reply if not i will try other options

Sounds like your lcd screen is damaged. Here is a link that shows how to replace the broken LCD Screen on the LG KF700. There are links to buy a new KF700 LCD screen
The iphone screen is divided in half and has a connection for each. Have you had the phone apart recently? if so you may have a loose connection on the LCD If not you LCD could have just gone bad. Is your phone under warranty? If you have Apple Care, call the local apple store and take the phone to them. They will probably give you a replacement under warranty. If it is not under warranty, find a local cell phone tech and have the LCD replaced or replace it yourself. The 3G is fairly easy to work on if your really really careful getting the Front Glass off.

put it in DFU mode while connected to the computer.
to
do this, hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds and then
let go of the power but keep on holding the home for 10 secs. the
screen will be black and nothing will show up. go to itunes and click
on your ipod on the left. then click restore. this should work.
if is not water damage , apple should repair it. If not well open the iphone go to youtube see vid how to open it. turn off iphone open it just pull off #1 and put back in. that's the lcd connector. This should work if not take #1 then #2 and # 3 put all conector back that should work. #1 Lcd conectot #2 is the Digitizer #IS the ligth. If you got gray lines the lcd may be broken.
