What special equipment do I need to watch Netflix

All you need is a computer and a connection to the internet and you can watch it directly on Netflix.com. In addition you can download the free Netflix app onto your smart TV, game console, streaming player, phone or tablet.
If what you are really asking is how do you watch it on your digital TV (not smart TV) then you will need a wireless home network and a streaming internet player such as Amazon Stick, Roku or Chromecast. Your digital TV will need an HDMI input connection. Most players are also powered through a USB port so it would be helpful to have a USB port on the TV but it can be powered with a transformer at a normal AC plugin.

I want to load video from my DirecTV DVR onto USB and vice versa.

From my experience, this isn't possible due to copyright reasons.  If your DVR has a USB port, it is usually meant for flashing the BIOS with updates by a technician.  Since this is a rented DVR from DirecTV, they probably have the USB port disabled since they can update the DVR from their end.  All you can do is search Google using your model number since we would be liable for guiding you how to "hack" into DirecTV's property.

Watch laptop movies on TV?

What you would need is a VGA to RCA converter cable. Something like this. Once hooked up, use your Fn key combination to switch the view from the internal monitor on the laptop to the external monitor, now your TV.
