Lawn mower ran out of gas, after refilling it will start, run for a few seconds and cuts off. There is no primer button for this model.

Yes you can. The only reason small engines have the primer button/bulb is to get gas to the carburator to make it easier to start it. If your mower starts OK without using the primer bulb you will not harm the mower.

sounds like the main jet is blocked. remove it and run a piece of fine wire through it and retest.

Not typically. Remember some primers have a hole in them to function as a vent for the carb.
Short runs (2 to 3 seconds) are usually caused by a blockage in the carb's main or idle jet.

You can check the priming circuit manually by pulling the plug off the spark plug and then with our hand over the air inlet to the carb have someone give the mower 3-5 pull starts. Then, put the plug boot back on and try to start it. Did it work? Is it still running? If it started and ran your primer bulb probably has a leak and needs replacement. If it started and ran for a few seconds and died clean out the main jet and the bowl inlet.

You can look at the breakdown of the carb in your manual to see where these parts are. Or just go online and find a familiar carb diagram and work from there.

Maybe the engine is running with the fuel from the primer bulb (about few seconds), the carburator is not working and need to be removed checked and cleaned, the most common fail is a jet clogged.

On some mowers...if the gas cap vent is not working properly, it will run fine for about 15 or 20 minutes, start spitting and sputtering, if you loosen the cap, and let air back into the tank it starts running normally again.
