Speakers started making a humming noise - Altec Lansing VS2421 Main / Stereo Speaker

The humming sound is 60 cycles or a harmonic thereof emanating from poor filtering in the power supply. Better get the supply serviced before the speaker gets damaged.

Possibly a bad cable or bad ground or bad outlet?. Easy solution, try a different outlet and see if the hum still exists. Also, make sure your speaker cables are NOT run parallel along with, or close to any power cables, Speaker wires can and will pick up AC "Humm" noise.

Switch on your amp, keep its volue down to extreme low, and listen if there is still hum through the left channel or not. If still there is hum, the left side power amplifier section inside the amp;ifier is faulty. If htere is no hum at this state, hum enters thorugh the audio input terminal, and the input wires must be checked for open sheild connection. OK.

If the noise is accross all channels then it's most likely the large electroltic capacitors in the power supply. These filter out the mains hum 50/60hz. There might be two or more they will be the biggest! Even if you can determine only one has gone, it's best to replace them all.

This sounds like a dry capacitor on the input / output audio circuit or a dry solder joint on the IC chip left output.

You can go buy a audioquest SUB-X subwoofer cable with a additional ground wire on it an connect the ground cable to the ground slot of the receiver an the other end to a screw on the sub or into one of the high output terminals on the woofer if it has them an this will take that humming sound right away but the cable is around $90

Is it plugged in with a 3.5 millimeter jack? If it is, pull it out of the computer and press you thumb on the tip, if no humming noise comes out, your speakers are probably blown.

However, if a humming noise does come out. Please check to make sure the volume on the computer is turned up/unmuted, the software's volume is turned up/unmuted, your sound card driver is installed (Right-Click "My Computer" -> left click on properties -> Click on the Hardware tab -> click on "Device Manager" -> Click the "+" next to "Sound, video and game controllers" and make sure there is no Red "X"'s or yellow "!"'s.

If you do get a hum, and you do have everything set up right in Windows, try a different pair of speakers or head phones. Your sound card might be fried.

please try better speakers better ohms orhigher wattage. improper speakers not for pc's or laptop will cause the hum..

There are no speakers attached but if for any reason humming is comming its the transformer inside the casing. Very comming in transformers that after some time they start humming noise.Its not for all of them but its some coiling fault but it doesn't effect anything.

IF it was too load you probable blew the speaker Just disconnect the side that is making noise or is it both side?
