Try checking out to see if maybe you have a bad memory inside first. then if thats not the problem im gonna have to figure your hard drive might be going bad because of corrupt files and fragments.
This was the problem a month ago - exact same thing. A clean install of XP was done and everything worked great. She did say a popup came up, while at a website, saying "the site has a virus, click here to place virus in the vault, etc". She unknowingly clicked on that option. when she went to start the machine the next time she got the startup option screen.
With a clean install of XP do you think it's a corrupt file?
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ANTI VIRUS MALWARE. THEY ARE PRETTY SNEAKY MASKING THEMSELVES AS IT COMES FROM MICROSOFT. LOOK WHAT I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE WHEN THIS KIND OF STUFF HAPPENS IS COPY ANY IMPORTANT PICS TO A THUMB DRIVE OR DISK OR AND TEXT DOCUMENT. BUT SAVE NO PROGRAMS, AND DO A COMPLETE FULL FORMAT OF THE PC OR LAPTOP. BUT IF ITS A NEWER LAPTOP OR DESKTOP THEN YOU WILL HAVE A SYSTEM RECOVERY PARTITION INSTALLED ON IT AND DURING 1ST BOOT SCREEN YOU CAN CLICK ON THE KEY THAT TAKES YOU TO SYSTEM RECOVERY AND IT WILL BE SET BACK TO FACTORY DEFAULTS JUST LIKE YOU 1ST BROUGHT IT HOME FROM FACTORY OR STORE
