I would disagree with Dan, only three years old the brushes would not be that worn and if the brushes are that worn it would not even mix liquids. It sounds very much that one of the three gears in the transmission case are worn or stripped. that's why it does mix liquids because there is no stress on the gears as soon as stress is applied the loud thunk is the worm or bevel gear popping out and then stopping because the worm gear no longer has any other gear engaging it.
It sounds like you need to change the brushes. You can look up your parts manual online here and then buy them online. Should be under $10.
