Hi i have a canon PIXMA MP280, I tried to scan a document today and the scanner will not operate and no alarms are activated on the printer. I have shut down both the computer and printer disconnected then reconnected all components and replaced the low ink cartridges but the screen still continues to flash but do nothing when i press the scan button

See Operation Panel. .... Lights or flashes orange when an error occurs, such as paper-out or ink-out. .... You can switch the size of paper loaded in the Rear Tray between A4 and 8.5" .... hi, error31 and others can be cleared by holding the reset button down until it sounds like it wants to print- push scan and start
should be no error and work fine you have to hear the printer work after reset is pressed or you reset again until it works hold button for ten to fifteen seconds 10-15

you have to install the scanner driver & application in able to use the scanner to scan documents.

Go to the official Canon website: www.usa.canon.com and redownload driver and MP Navigator. MP Navigator lets you choose the size of the scan you want. I was having the same problem and just fixed it today.

My printer does the same. And it's my third Canon printer and ever time when I try to scan a picture or etc. it just ends up saying that the printer can't communicate or that it's shut off. :(
