Kenmore 80 washing machine -water sensor not working

Hi Almostbob,
Our water sensor isn't working. I did some research and wanted to confirm that the 80 series is similar enough to the 90 series, that I can remove the console and check the water sensor settings. Any special hints about taking off the console and what, exactly, I'm looking for at the water sensor location? Thanks so much, this is my first try at home repair!
Hugs,
carole

I followed the directions on removing the console. The tube seems to be attached properly, the dial stem will rotate properly. The water level will only fill half way. Is there another solution to this problem.

Hi Almost Bob, My Kenmore 80 Series recently started only filling to a small load level. I followed your instructions and there was water in the hose. Blew out the water with an air compressor and it raised the level an inch or two but still not up to the level of a large load. Also moved the bolt clockwise, moved the switch back and forth and can see that it's moving okay, but still not as high as it should. Any suggestions as to next steps? Also, if the water sensor itself needs to be replaced, how do I go about ordering that? Thanks for your help. BTW, this is my first venture into washer repair and I found it enjoyable, especially with your excellent instructions! Wendy in Connecticut.

Yes,
Kenmore is uniformly easy to work on, everything comes off from the front.
There are two 80 models,
on the most common, newer model, the edge trims on the console pop off, there is a phillips screw in each corner, remove the screw, slide the console forward, lift up and flip over.
on the older one the console is released by sliding a putty knife or other blunt blade under the corners of the console to uncatch a clip, lift up flip over

  • ensure air tube is attached (water level sensor operates off air tube from bottom of drum to control body, (bottom is not loose or there is water all over the floor))
  • Blow any water out of the air tube, it should be empty when the washer is empty, water remaining in the tube messes up the pressure sensing (usually makes water level lower)
  • ensure wires are connected to control body.
Kenmore pressure switches are adjustable, the adjustment is hidden.
An internal spring stretches over time and does not react properly.
to test
  1. remove the water level knob from the front side of console
  2. depress the lock tab at the right side of water level sensor body where it contacts the back side of the console and rotate counter clockwise 45degrees
  3. withdraw water level sensor body
  4. adjacent to shaft for the knob is 1/8inch bolt head, turn clockwise to raise, counter clockwise to lower water level.
  5. washer can be operated with the console open and the level body removed - dont shock yourself on the cable connectors
  6. test, adjust, test adjust. (water level switch may need to be flicked hi-med & back to test adjustment
  7. if no effect replace water level sensor body
The water level switch body contains a small spring that is not really up to the job and stretches over years,
do this repair, on call, no parts, takes 15 minutes,, 3-4 times a month

    For guest

the second set of instructions deals with your problem, I think.

remove the knob and control body, then you can adjust water level with a very small (1/8inch) bolthead/nut next to the knob shaft

Our Kenmore 80 Series overflowed tonight, and it took less than 5 minutes to figure out the solution (based on this site). The pressure sensor tube came loose. I re-attached and it now works fine. THANK YOU!!!

I have a kenmore ultra fabric care washer heavy duty 80 series with electronic temperature control and I can only get hot water not cold.

If it used to work and now does not, either the valve that controls the water inlet to the hot is bad or the temp sensor in the machine is bad. What is the whole model number?

I have a series 80 washer. it will fill with water but wil not start washing.

check your timer motor. if the front indicator knob isn't rotating or you don't hear a motor noise it will more than likely be the problem.

I have a Kenmore 80 that doesn't spin

You may not have given me enough information, but here goes. If the washer drain some water and then does not spin, the washing machine clutch assembly needs to be replaced. If it is not draining at all then the water pumps needs to be replaced. Water pump replacement is easy, but the clutch assembly- you better be very experienced. Unplug the appliance before you attempt these repairs! You will need the model number to get the proper replacement parts.

I have a kenmore 80 series washing machine and it will overflow if I am not there to cut it off.... what is wrong?

your overflow sensor has gone bad. Also called your water sensor. Meaning that when filling with water, the sensor is not telling to inlet valves to shut off. This part is located in the back of the washing machine. You will see a hose coming from the top of the washing machine running down the side of the drum.

Kenmore Series 80 Washer timer knob spins

Something in the timer came apart. Timer needs replaced. When in good working order, the timer should ONLY ever be turned clockwise..Reversing this could break it.

Kenmore washing machine 80 series

check for kinks in the pipe or restrictions to the flow in the pipes before it gets to the washer, if all is ok then check the filter on the outside of the water connector on the machine for dirt

if you confirm all is clear and the flow of water is not the problem before the machine, replace the cold water solenoid
