Hello, My Pentax W90 recently started acting up. Everytime I turn it on it takes two pictures and then locks up not being able to take any more pictures. A green square comes up in the middle and when I press any of the buttons nothing happens. I turn the camera off and on again and it does the same thing. I tried taking the battery out and the card and tried it again but it still does the same. I'm half tempted to throw it off a tall building. Please help. Oscar

Why not look in the manual to see if there are any settings you have inadvertently changed ? BTW, you don't need a tall building - knocking it off a table would probably have the same effect.

SOURCE: Memory card locked!??

What you need to do is take out the card, and on the side of it there should be a little gray thing which can slide up and down. It needs to be slid all the way up. I hope this helps!!

SOURCE: Unlock card

If the card is locked, you could the steps below:

- Turn off camera
- Remove memory card
- Take a look on the switch of the memory card itself
* If it's at the TOP = card is UNLOCKED
* If it's at the BOTTOM = card is LOCKED

- So, you just have to make sure that the switch is at the top
for the memory card to be UNLOCKED

After doing that, you just have to put back the memory card to your camera and turn on the camera. Try to check if this works.

SOURCE: My camera shows CARD LOCKED

Try taking the card out of the camera and clicking the side of the card - there may be a little gap on one side of the card or a small button that you can slide up and down and then reinsert your card.

My pentax w90 will only take a photo automatically when turned on,

Per Evan89's remark above, on these units the "shutter" button fails in the "on" or "down" position. There are a lot of reports on the internet. As soon as you turn the camera on it charges the flash and takes one or more pictures. It won't respond to other controls because it senses that the shutter bitton is depressed. A side effect is that the battery drains quickly.
I'm looking around to see if I can order a replacement switch assembly since these cameras are easy to take apart.

Card is locked

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Unlock Pentax Optio S5z

I had the same problem with the exact same camera (Pentax Optio S5Z) that happened the same way. I searched everywhere on the web and finally found this post that didn't have a solid solution. So I started experimenting with different button combinations and finally figured it out.

Hold the OK button while turning on the camera. The screen should indicate that it is in audio record mode. Now press the Menu button and use the navigation keys to find and execute the system reset option.

After turning it off and back on it should function normally.

Samsung c630

Just bought one recently, and experienced a melt down like that..
What batteries are u using?..
This cam uses lots of power and i started off with 2700 rechargeables, after their 1st charge they emptied fairly quickly, after shutting the cam down for a few mins, they soon picked up again, i was using flash everytime, i guess this was the problem... When my rechargeables started to run down, the cam acted weirdly.... i think ur problem may be because of batteries weakening at that particular time??
Are you aware whether ur batteries were full or nearing empty at the time??
