My son is in a dorm hall with DSL internet...running Vista on new Dell laptop. Has a Dynex Enhanced Wireless G router (maybe this is the problem, should it just be Dynex Wireless G), but no modem. Modem connection seems to be simplest, but doesn't have modem, and may need laptop/internet at same time. With the router, it still looks like he needs a modem or am I incorrect? ICS doesn't appear to work with Vista and he doesn't have a gateway (although could exchange router for one), but I don't know who the internet provider is thru the dorm, or does this even matter?
The enhaced version just give more range of signal over the normal dynex, regarding the internet provider it depends because sometimes you'll need a password and user to connect to the wireless signal. The dynex is used to connect from a cable signal (RJ-45)internet and then it will transfer the connection to wireless so it can be use from any laptop with wireless connection. So for example you DSL internet connection is a cable (RJ-45) then you connect that cable to the dynex router, then the router will automatically transmit the signal to wireless so any nearby pc can connect to it. If the laptop doesn't have wireless, then you'll have to buy a card to be able to connect to wireless signal or you could by also a (RJ-45 straight-through cable Cat 5e) to connect from one of the ports from the DYNEX to the laptop. Hope it helps.
