How disassemble? Trying to open up my SD450 to try to fix E18 problem. Can't get covers off. 2 screws each on left, right and bottom, but still it's sticking at the top. Is there another screw somewhere I need to remove?

  • dan93230 Aug 19, 2008

Thanks. I'll try it tomorrow. Are you in the US or UK? Generally how much does fixing the E18 problem cost?

  • dan93230 Aug 22, 2008

Thomas, I might be interested in this. I could ship it to you and give you a US address to send it to. [I live in UK, but going to US in early Oct.] Is there a phone or email address to ask more about this?

S7310n disassemble

This is HP Support, and the download page for the Upgrading and Servicing Guide,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=1156509&

On this page scroll down to - Upgrading and Serving Guide, and left-click on it.
(Second file listed)

This is a PDF file download. The computer you are using has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.

After you click on the Upgrading and Servicing Guide, file name, you will Not see anything happening for up to 30 seconds, or so.

Be patient, as the file is downloading in the background.

The Upgrading and Servicing Guide tells you, and shows you, how to open the computer case. (Page 7)

Barring that you are not able to download this PDF file, I will attempt to tell you how to open the computer case. (If you are using a Dial Up network connection, you may be as old as me, before the file downloads)

1) Computer off unplug the power cable FROM the surge protector. (Not shouting)
THEN unplug the power cable from the back of the computer. (Power Supply)

Now unplug all cables connected to the computer.

2) Lay the computer on a towel on top of a table. Keeps the table, and the computer from being scratched.
Lay the computer on it's Right side. (Computer facing you, the right side is to the right. Hey, don't laugh, lol!)

Loosen and remove the three computer cover screws, on the back of the computer's case.

The computer cover that removes is an L shape. It comes down the Left side from the top, and wraps under the bottom.

Looking at the Top/Back of the computer, there is a screw to remove on the Top, of the Left side of the computer case. (Top/Left side corner)

Looking at the Bottom/Back of the computer, there is a screw to remove from the Bottom, of the Left side.
(Bottom/Left side corner)

Looking at the Bottom/Back of the computer, there is a screw to remove from the Bottom, of the Right side.
(Bottom/Right side corner)

After these three screws are removed, the Left side of the computer cover is slid back about 1/2 inch, (1.25cm), and lifted straight up.

BEFORE you reach inside! (Not shouting)

Your body carries STATIC electricity.
Static can fry out, (Short Circuit), the hardware components inside the computer.

TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case, to relieve your body of Static electricity.
If you get up, walk away, then return, Touch the metal frame again.

Now, do you wish to disassemble this desktop computer completely, or just remove, and replace a few hardware components?

The above Upgrading and Serving Guide from HP Support tells you, and shows you,

1) How to remove, and replace the computer cover

2) How to remove, and replace Ram Memory

3) How to remove, and replace an optical drive.
(CD/DVD Drive)

4) How to remove, and replace a PCI card, that is in a white PCI expansion slot, on the motherboard.

5) How to remove, and replace the CMOS battery

6) How to remove, and replace a Harddrive

Should you need further disassembly guidance, let me know in a comment.

Error E18, the zoom is blocked

Hi

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

There are six screws holding the metal frame of the camera body together, two on each side, and two on the bottom. Remove all screws, pop the strap-hook plate (sorry, probably not the most technical term there), then gently lift the front plate off by pulling up from the bottom, and remove the back plate in the same fashion. These should come off relatively easily. This is what the camera should look like as you remove the plates:
img-5340-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  1. Now, looking from the top of the camera, you should see a small motor on the left side, as shown below (it’s beneath the cable with a “22” written on it):
    img-5346-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  2. Take your screwdriver (or another small instrument) and gently try to rotate the plastic piece attached to the motor on the left side, as shown below:
    img-5359-thumb.jpg?w=324&h=217
  3. At this point, try placing the battery back in the camera (if you have removed it), turn the camera to one of the capture modes, and press the power button. If all went well, your lens should now be able to extend and retract properly.
Please do rate the solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Help

Place a thick bath towel (triple folded) on the table edge. with the camera off, hold it in your hand and tap the bottom of the camera with medium low force to the above mentioned table edge. Try turn it on to check if it's back to normal. You may need to tap it more then one time, if it doesn't work, with stronger impact force. Just be sensible, not too hard though.

In case you have doubt with this trick to fix, try google 'Canon E18' to find related problem being fixed by others with this method.

E18 pops up

An E18 error refers to a problem with the lens. Generally you receive this error if the lens is stuck, which often happens if you drop your camera while the lens is extended or if something like sand or dirt gets inside the lens barrel/gears. Your situation, however, sounds different since the lens seems to extend before giving the E18 error.

If the lens is fully extending before giving the E18 error, you most likely have a problem with the lens sensor located around the O-ring inside your lens barrel... either the sensor itself is damaged or the little plastic piece on the O-Ring that triggers the sensor is broken. If that's the case, there is nothing you can do yourself unless you feel like taking apart the entire camera and finding a replacement piece.

If the lens only comes out a little bit and is not fully extending before giving the E18 error, it sounds like something is making your lens get stuck. If you've recently been to the beach or a park where there is sand, try using a can of compressed air and blow it into the little gaps in the lens barrel... you may be able to blow the sand/dirt out, solving your problem. If the air doesn't work and you feel comfortable taking apart your camera, you can get to the gearbox and manually retract the lens by following my instructions below. Otherwise, I'd suggest a repair shop.

WARNING: TAKING APART YOUR CAMERA VOIDS THE WARRANTY AND CAN BE DANGEROUS! The capacitor that charges the flash can still hold enough voltage to give you a massive shock even when the battery has been removed for some time. Please only attempt to disassemble the camera if you feel comfortable doing so. I accept no liability for anything that happens should you follow my instructions below.

In order to open the camera you will need to remove six screws on the outer casing (2 where the wriststrap ties on, 2 on the opposite side, and 2 on the bottom). After unscrewing all 6 screws, pull the back and front casings off from the bottom out, as there is a clip-hinge on the top next to the shutter button that needs to disengage before you can fully remove the casing. Once the casing is removed, there is one screw holding in the flash apparatus, on the side. Remove it and carefully bend back the metal cage around the flash apparatus and pull it up. The flash will still be attached to the camera with a pair of wires (yellow and black) and a ribbon cable... leave those in place. Please be CAREFUL when handling the flash because the capacitor (the big black thing under the flash) can hold enough voltage to give you a severe shock even with the battery removed. Underneath where the flash was you will see a multi-tiered black piece of plastic... this is the gearbox cover. Remove the three screws from the cover and carefully lift the cover off the gearbox. Inside will be a motor shaft and 4 gears (2 white, 2 black). Remove the BIG black gear closest to the lens. Then temporarily replace the gearbox cover. With the big black gear removed, the lens should freely glide in and out if you push or pull on it. Do this several times in order to clean out any gunk that may have gotten into the grooves of the lens barrel. Then, open up the gearbox, replace the black gear, and screw the gearbox cover back on. Replace the flash into the metal cage and screw it back in. Finally, put the metal outer casing back on the camera and, before screwing it in, try to turn it on. Hopefully it will work again and you can screw everything back in. If not, your problem will require significantly more disassembly.

Both Screens Flicker after trying to replace touch screen

I finally solved the flickering problem on my DS (!), after I made my 1st engineering attempt overhaul shell, top screen and broken right hinge.   Was really frustrated about the flicker afterwards, and opened up unit back up too many times to debug (risked damage to cable ribbon everytime!).
Anyway turns out there's 2 hidden screws (location:  inside the battery compartment near where the front 'volume slider' is located) that adjusts the flickering (like how you need to calibrate an LCD monitor from doing same flickering effects) . You'll need a really (really!) small philips (+) screwdriver to do the adjustment.
Open up the battery cover with the VOL label upside down & facing you.  The adjustment screws are recessed deep inside the plastic...a right and left screw.  With the DS turned 'ON' to see the screen (whether you twist your neck to be able to see or have a mirror on the table in front of the DS)....slowly/carefully turn the screws to adjust until you like the clarity.  That's it.   The right screw = bottom screen.  The left screw = top screen.
Now.... on to figuring out how to replace or fix the broken Power toggle switch that I snapped off!  Currently using the toothpick method, but that's getting old!  Any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!
