In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
You can load the software from the Hp site:

HP has the disc available for order in some countries, depending on your OS. When I went to http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Deskjet-F4200-All-in-One-Printer-series/3390945/model/3390948 and chose Windows 7 as the operating system and clicked Update, I found the link for ordering physical media at the bottom of the list of software and drivers. The order page is http://support.hp.com/us-en/mediaorder/HP-Deskjet-F4200-All-in-One-Printer-series/3390945/model/3390948/softwareitem/CB744-10007/step1 . (For me, this page worked in IE.)

Fill out the form and agree to the shipping and handling fees. I hope this helps. This link didn't appear for Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. I hope this helps.

Just brought a hp deskjet all in one F4280,the software that came with it is for F4200 is this the wright software.

Software for F4200 series will fit all HP starting for F42..., including F4280. That is the right software.
