I had the same problem so i went to the local best buy store and I found out that the Garmin 5000 doesn't have a built in baterry pack therefore it must be plugged into an external power source, such as the car jack or wall ac in order to use it. I exchanged my 5000 for the Garmin 880 which i find much better. Hope this helps...

Garnub Nuvi 500 power source

I have checked around but can't find anything smaller than 12 volt booster pack, the type used for boosting car batteries. They have a cigarette lighter outlet. They are quite heavy to carry around after a while but they can come in handy depending on the circumstances.

My garmin nuvi 5000 is frozen.

Hi there,

You need to download and install this update (firmware). This will correct the problem. If you cannot get the system connect to the PC try installing the software directly to the SD Card.

Follow the below link to download new firmware -

Good Luck!!

Thanks

Garmin nuvi 5000 wont turn on. I can plug up the usb up to the computer and the screen shows garmin logo with a gps connected to a computer like its charging. But when i press the power button weather it...

Your nuvi 5000 does NOT have a internal battery and that means that you cannot operate it unless it is connected to a 12 volt power source. Connecting it to your computer via USB allows you to install map updates, check for firmware updates, etc, but you will not be able to use it as a gps while it is connected to the computer. There is nothing wrong with your gps.
To use your gps in the home you need to purchase a 12 volt adapter, there are several types, plug the adapter into your wall outlet and connect your gps to it. If you can sit near a window it will help in picking up the satellite signal. Just keep in mind that you cannot connect the 12 volt power supply and use the usb cable at the same time. Enjoy your gps.

Can not charge only works plugged in

Your Garmin nuvi 5000 will never charge because it has NO internal battery. The only time it will operate is when it is plugged into a 12 volt power source. I have one and it really doesn't bother me at all. I bought a second cradle and a 12 volt adapter for use in the home.
