The machine makes a periodic grinding sound with each rotation of the spinning clothes drum suggesting there is a foreign object lodged between the clothes drum and the outer casing? How can I gain access to this space to remove whatever is lodged between the inner drum and outer casing, or is this a problem best left to a Maytag repairman?

I followed your advice and attached video by removing the belt. This allowed the drum to rotate freely in both clockwise and counter clockwise movements. This free rotation movement back and forth dislodged the foreign object, which was a roofing nail that was sitting in one of the holes of the drum. The nail head prevented the nail from slipping through the drum wall and eventually gumming up the water pump, which has happened to me before with smaller nails..although there was no belt probelm the video was useful in showing me the proper method of belt installation. This is my lucky day as it saved me an expensive vist with the Maytag repairman. For once and for all, I must remember to empty my pants' pockets before putting them into the machine. Thank you!

My washing machine has started making a terrible noise.

If your washing machine has started making a terrible noise, there could be several reasons for this. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to identify and resolve the issue:
  1. Check for objects in the drum: Sometimes, objects such as coins, buttons, or zippers can get caught in the drum and cause a noise. Turn off the machine and check the drum for any foreign objects. If you find any, remove them carefully.
  2. Balance the load: If the machine is making a loud banging noise, it may be due to an unbalanced load. Open the machine and redistribute the clothes evenly.
  3. Check the drum bearings: The drum bearings are responsible for allowing the drum to rotate smoothly. If they are worn or damaged, they can cause a loud grinding or scraping noise. To check the bearings, rotate the drum by hand. If it feels stiff or makes a grinding noise, the bearings may need to be replaced.
  4. Inspect the drive belt: If the drive belt is loose or damaged, it can cause a squeaking or rattling noise. Turn off the machine and check the belt for signs of wear or damage. If the belt needs to be replaced, consult your user manual for instructions.
  5. Contact a professional: If you are unsure of what is causing the noise or if none of the above solutions work, it may be necessary to contact a professional technician. They can diagnose the issue and recommend the appropriate course of action.
Note: Before attempting any maintenance or repair work on your washing machine, be sure to unplug it from the power source and read the user manual thoroughly. Also, follow any safety precautions recommended by the manufacturer.

Dear fixya, I have a hotpoint aquarius wma52 which sounds like it grinds when drum turns. I gather it may be the bearing but I don't see how to take off the back and check to replace.thankyou

HI,
First of all, is the noise only heard when the drum is rotating or when the pump is running? This really makes the difference. Sometimes an object can rub on the outer tub during rotation and cause the same noise, other times, I have found foreign object within the pump and caused the same problem. So when is the noise heard is very important to lead you in the correct direction.
I will be glad to assist you if you like

I washed a load of clothes and it has tore up alot of my clothes

This could be a foreign object stuck inside the drum. The inner drum has many holes in it and certain objects can get lodged in one of the holes - commonly the wire from an underwired bra!

With the machine empty feel the entire inside surface of the drum, taking care as there might be something protruding from one of the holes. If you find something there it is usually possible to pull it out with a pair of pliers/pincers.

It is also possible that the drum itself has been damaged so check for any sharp edges, again taking care when feeling the surface.

During the spin cycle the washing machine becomes VERY noisy, sounds like its off-balance, but happens EVERY time, even with very small loads. The whole unit doesn't move when it happens, just extremely...

During the spin cycle the drum moves at a higher RPM and so the counter weight of the clothes within can make the drum rotate eccentric or out of sync.
So check if the belt is loose on the motor, checck if the spindle is tight with friction or the drum assembly suspension is out of alignment.
You must check the reason with the following points to confirm the drum spinning making noise. check point of noise , is this on hitting the sides , or from the motor, any foreign objects or the drum spindle. But you are the judge with a first view. Use good lighting to look out and confirm the fault.

Keeps making holes in clothes

Carefully run your hand around the inside of the washing drum to check for catches or damage, perhaps a screw or similar that has lodged in the drain holes of the drum. Remove the agitator, if applicable, and check for foreign object(s) lodged underneath.

Grinding noise when drum rotates

may be a foreign object trapped in between the inner and outer tub. Major Disassembly required to split the outer tub. May also be the rear bearing in which case back half will have to be replaced.
