Our set is 2 yrs old and for the last 6 months, I get brown lines on at least 2-3 things every load. Any suggestions?

It is not the dryer causing the problem. We get the brown streaks on our white clothes before putting them in the dryer. I have ruined more white clothes over the past six months with this Duet washing machine!!! We also don't use bleach so I don't think it is the HE/Clorox combo that somebody mentioned earlier. Anybody know what exactly is causing this yet... before I throught the moldy stain causing Whirlpool duet out?
Had a Whirlpool Tech out recently. I think I know the problem after fighting this same problem for months and months! There is a hose that the water drains from the washer to the wall. Pull it out and look at it. Is it covered in brown gunk? Well, mine was! The guy said that it is from years of detergent and fabric softener build up. The reason it gets on whites, is because that is the only kind of load I use HOT water for. So, it loosens up the gunk and it is redistibuting it back onto the clothes!
His solution:
*Wash about 5-6 loads with only a few old towels (like 2 towels).
*Use 1 1/2 bleach and 1 1/2 Vinegar. (it will stink!)
*After several loads, the gunk build up should be dissolving. I washed several extra loads and still see some in the hose. My husband is looking to replace the whole hose.
* He said only use less than 2 Tablespoons of HE detergent. I was flabbergasted and asked how my clothes would ever get clean. He said these washers are a mechanical clean, not a chemical clean. The way the water swishes and moves does the cleaning.
*NEVER use liquid fabric softener. Only dryer sheets from now on. (Very bummed about that. Love fabric softener.)
In hindsight, I didn't always use HE in the beginning. I use that bleach that is kind of (detergent-y), so no more of that. (Only real bleach for now on.) And, I always used A LOT of detergent. Once I get all the gunk out, I am hoping for nice fresh loads of laundry once again.
Also, always leave your washer door open to prevent mold/mildew build up. Wipe it out if you need to. Every so often run an empty load (or with an old towel) of just the bleach and vinegar mix. Seems like a waste of water and energy (defeating the purpose of the energy efficient washer in my opinion), but worth not losing any more of my clothes to these horrendous brown stains.
One more thing. You may want to try a combo of bleach and straight vinegar on the stains to remove them. I tried it today and it worked! Obviously only on whites with bleach, but worth a shot on colors to use straight vinegar and ERA detergent (was told that works too).
Good luck!
Clorox bleach pen tends to get the stains out, really dark ones need two washings. Also only seem to have problem with small white loads with no bleach. The last batch was the worst and it was washed in cold water. Have always suspected the washer but now seem to think its the dryer.
Has anyone checked with Whirlpool customer service? I called twice and of course, they pretend that they are not aware of the problem when it's been on the internet for 3+ years now!! The customer rep said she would have to send a technician and that she recommended that I do it during my first call and could always cancel later...I will never buy a Whirlpool again, not only because of the brown lines I'm getting on my clothes, but mostly because they take us customers for STUPID!!

Drum seals on the dryer. Here is my hypothesis. The blower fan on my dryer was so clogged up with lint that the airflow into the dryer was restricted. The drum would get so hot to melt the adhesive on the felt drum seals. This adhesive would them migrate through the seal into the dryer. We would only see it on the whites because the loads tended to be smaller, thus more heat allowing the dry adhesive in the seals to re melt again and agan, staining any clothing coming into contact with it. Since I have replaced the seals, and run larger loads of whites, we haven't seen any staining.
I think it is the felt drum seal causing these marks. IT is defenitly my dryer with light colors and white cloths. Even with low temperatures. Mine started a month after the garantee expired. Whirpool guys want to send a guy to see. I regret having scrap my 20 yr old Maytag dryer!!!!. Will keep you posted
Then why would the orangy-brown streaks be on my laundry before they even went into the dryer?

Ck dryer ..look at seals front and rear for brown rust color they should black or dark gray if they are brown best bet is to replace both ..although it's kind of unusal to have them discolor this early any thing is possible what could be happening as the clothes are drying and they go past and against the seals they are picking up the stains

We will try your suggestion. Thank you soo much.
I have the same problem, I have the duet and I keep getting brown lines on the clothes and it is annoying, I took a white wash clothes and pressed extremely hard around those felt seals in front and back and NO LINES!!! wHAT THE HECK IS IT????
My childs white T-shirts are coming out of the laundry with brown spots all over them. They are not stained going in. I use bleach in the cycle too.
I also have been having similar problems with my duet washer. We purchased it in April 2005. It leaves thin lines that look like rust (orange brown color) about 2-3 inches long on mainly my white clothes when I wash in either warm or hot water. Not all the time but I've ruined many nice white shirts and t-shirts and am really sick of it. I've tried stain and rust remover and it won't come out of the clothes. I called the repair man and paid him $60 to watch my washer run through a cycle and test my water to make sure it was hot. He did check my dryer for the above mention fix but it was ok. What a waste of $. He supposedly called Whirlpool and talked to a tech who told him there is only stainless steel parts in the washer and nothing could be causing rust. He basically told me to call Whirlpool directly. I've ordered a cleaner from smellywashers.com that was featured on our local news channel. I'm going to try that and see if it helps get rid of the problem otherwise I'll be contacting Whirlpool unless anyone else has a fix I can try.
My wife has the same issue - she gets the spots out by rubbing with Lestoil & rewashing. I suspect a chemical reaction with the HE detergent & the bleach (Clorox), as this only occurs on whites. We are going to experiment with alternatives. I'll re-post if anything works.
I have had the same problem as well on whites using bleach and colors as well. Â I had a repairman come out twice and once he replaced the felt liner inside the dryer. Â After that, I still got the brown lines. Â Stain remover doesn't seem to help at all. Â It's very frustrating. Â I would not recommend the duet washer or dryer to anyone.
light brown streaks, not on every load, only on whites. dont know if its from washer or dryer.
I have had the same problem with white clothes only, cant figure it out. I do know that it didnt happen when the machine was brand new, it probably took about 2-3 years. So frustrating I want to send all my whites out to be washed.
