Maytag MAV6000AWW was not spinning, although the motor was running as if it were. It was when you went to transfer laundry that you saw the the closthes were still water logged. So, after checking the agitator and seeing that it wasn't moving easily, I messed with it some until it did and ran it in Spin and it was spinning. HOWEVER,.. the motor doesn't sound like it did. It sounds more like the rear end of a car going out - moaning. After consulting a few "do it yourself" books, I want to check into the possibility that a piece of clothing slipped over the top of the tub (you know how that sock monster is) and is interferring. My problem is that I can't seem to get the agitator off the stem! Under perfect conditions, is it supposed to lift up, unscrew or what? I bought the machine 2nd hand and don't have an Owner's Manual. Thanks! PS I don't see any leaks.

Thanks Daniel. I figured out that it pulls up. I opened the top of the machine and removed the rin and regardless of what the motor sounded like, I was shocked at all the guynk and dried/ wet lint not only under the rim, but outside the basket, as well. The bolts at the bottom of the basket were too "iffy" to try and remove them and risk them breaking. So, I cleaned everything up both inside and outside the machine, put more grease on the stem, reattached the agitator and I've run a few loads thus far without any problem. Judging from the sound alone, I suspect you may be right about a pump going out. It's just a matter of time. Thank you for your response. (By the way, the space between the basket and the tub is so minimal, I can't imagine anything but a sock, if that, made it down there).

I very much appreciate your help and responded in a "Comment" on the site (my first time using it, so didn't know to do otherwise).

Hi

Though I believe the issue is with the pump motor assembly that is not responding and so should be replaced however, as you want to check the agitator assembly then please check this video for step by step instructions on removing the agitator assembly:

Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Hitachi table saw motor just Hums.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved from Laundry Dryer.

Replace the start capacitor on the motor. The classis reason for humming and not spinning. The start capacitor gives the motor a jolt to get it running.

My washer wont rinse. It seems to have a hard time spinning, any suggestions?

do you hear the motor running ,it will drain but no spin, this has no belt in it it's built just like a whirlpool washer because whirlpool owns maytag now and this washer has a motor coupling,i would check this first,do you know if the agitator is working or do you hear a grinding noise when it's running?watch this video and you don't have to disconnect the wire harness to the motor if you don't want to,i don't just put motor off to right side still connected

What is a fair price for a maytag mav6000aww, we think 5 years old?

i would not pay more than 150.00
\ and only after i hooked up a hose and watched it work
these machines after five years have a way of loosing spin
and nailing it down is hard for a vet repair man
somtimes they just end up through parts at it

i would want to see it drain
and hear it spin

if they wont let you test it walk away
there apre plenty of good machines available on craigslist

Machine won't rinse or spin properly..also stinks!

The clothes are wet after spinning When the clothes are wet at the end of a cycle, check these:

Motor coupler
Spin cycle
Siphoning
Water-inlet valve
Motor coupler To test the motor coupler, re-start the washer in its spin cycle. Let the machine run for a minute, and then open the lid and notice whether the tub is spinning:

  • If it's spinning when you lift the lid, the coupler is fine.

  • If it isn't spinning--and your machine was produced by Whirlpool®--you may have a broken coupler. Many Whirlpool-made washers use a small, relatively inexpensive device called a motor coupling. This plastic-and-rubber component is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. When that happens, you need to replace it completely.

Spin cycle If the washer doesn't reach its proper spin speed, the clothes may be too wet at the end of a cycle. Check to be sure the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again. If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt (Maytag®), a worn clutch (GE®/Hotpoint®), or a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component.

Alternatively, there could be clothes caught between the inner and outer tubs. Read the "It spins but won't pump" section of the "It won't drain" section. Also, there could be other things that cause friction on the drive train. Seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

Siphoning If the water that pumps from the machine goes right back into the machine after the spin cycle, it may be because your washer is siphoning the water from a laundry tub with a slow drain, back into the washer. Try to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is there something stuck in the drain?) Also, be sure the drain hose doesn't reach more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub. If it does, cut off the excess.

Water-inlet valve Water-inlet valves eventually fail. One problem that may develop with a water-inlet valve is that it can no longer completely shut off when the electricity is turned off to it. Then, the valve may leak and drip water into the clothes tub--you may notice that your washer has water in it when you haven't used it for a few days. To fix this, replace the valve.
