2011 Laptop 7, years old. NO OS STATED, it was Vista or W7 !
not too old, less that 10 is good. as a rule.
buy a cheap $5 USB mouse use that, for only $5
fixing the trackpad takes 2 things, (3 really)
1: the unstated OS is not infected.
2: the pad switches inside are still good after 7 years of pounding it.
3: the track pad driver is not missing
here is the w7 driver at HP, fixya btw is NOT HP.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/compaq-presario-cq60-400-notebook-pc-series/3944778/model/3979082
the driver is here. w7 Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad Driver
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44501-45000/sp44940.exe
if you meant mouse dead and not trackpad dead (or funky),then do buy new $5 mouse.
one of the most cheap things to buy for any pc is mouse, or mouse pad. (even at walmart)
do it now. and end this pain.

If still under warranty suggest have it repaired.
Most computers out of warranty also have out of date software and are not worth spending funds on.
Suggest upgrade to a new machine.
a 7 year warranty on a laptop, wow.
a cheap mouse works, why throw it away for just the lack of mouse.?
Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft.
You need periodic software updates from Microsoft for security and speed reasons.
Windows 10 is a lot better both speed and features.
Suggest not spend a dime on old out of date equipment.

SOURCE: Mouse pad problem..
dependant on operating system, in XP go to my computer, right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager, go down list to mice and pointing devices, click the '+' sign, then right click on your touchpad, select uninstal.
Restart notebook and it will install it again and work ok.
SOURCE: Mouse pad buttons don't work properly. Scroll works fine.
Update your drivers, first:

Then go to Start: Control Panels: Mouse and double-check your configuration for each button.

almost certainly this means that the drivers for the touchpad have reverted to the windows generic drivers. Try the driver from Compaq here. Sadly, without knowing the OS and exact model number of the laptop I can't be more specific on the link than that. The exact model of the laptop is usually printed on a sticker on the bottom.
